What I really like about #GNOME46 is that it turned out to be a great release for old and low-end devices. One of my test devices is Thinkpad T400. That hardware is over 15 years old and actually got faster over the last few years - especially this release. One of my favorite improvements here, headed by Christian Hergert, was the boost to VTE. Terminals using #gtk4 are now much faster and responsive. I mean, damn, even switching tabs doesn't trigger a full redraw!

Nice. I have a Librebooted T400 for my laptop. 8GB RAM and an SSD and she's great. I use Trisquel with Mate and does all my basic tasks like email, web, documents, etc.
My MR for the #gtk4 demo video player finally landed \o/ That means if you build #gtk4 main on top of #GStreamer main, you can now run gtk4-demo --run=video_player and get zero-copy video playback - at least when using HW with VA-API support, i.e. Intel/AMD for now, and a #Wayland compositor with YUV format support (most importantly NV12). I'll also be at #fosdem and do a short talk about #Wayland video offloading related stuff I've been posting about, featuring #gtk4, #gstreamer, #Chromium #gnomeshell and #weston See you there! And no, you should still use #firefox :P Video offloading in Firefox is another thing I hope to see in 2024, together with stateless v4l2 decoding. Anyone interested (and/or even willing to pay some dev hours) into that?

@rmader Is there a version of the ticket that doesn't require a Google employee login? @rmader@floss.social i seriously wish we go to wayland instead of x11 since the x11 way of working is slow , and there is no progress on that project @rmader@floss.social i seriously wish we go to wayland instead of x11 since the x11 way of working is slow , and there is no progress on that project Mind that video support is not quite great at the moment. This is because #libcamera currently lacks good frame rate reporting that Dino can use. But that will be hopefully get fixed soon in libcamera / pipewire. #Firefox 116 can finally be build without #x11 dependencies / #Wayland only \o/ ac_add_options --enable-default-toolkit=cairo-gtk3-wayland-only https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1833855 I hope we'll also get Mutter/#gnomeshell over the line for #GNOME 45 Not having to deal with X11 is especially nice on #LinuxMobile |
Don't expect too much for now: both image quality and performance are not quite where we want them to be.
That, however, also means that there are a lot of low hanging fruits where help is very welcome :)
We need to create #libcamera tuning files for the individual cameras, the swISP could be improved to use the GPU for debayering, there are WIP autofocus patches that could be tried and improved - and in Snapshot we need to reduce the number of copies before frames reach the screen or encoders.
