Random person: oh, what’s #Mastodon?

Me: *starts eagerly explaining the distributed nature of fediverse*

Random: *eyes immediately glaze over*

Me: *sighs* it’s “better Twitter” :blobfoxcry2:

@aronow I usually say it's like Xitter but without central control. Might compare to personal blogs vs. Facebook, depending on the audience. Even people much older than me seem to get the idea of being connected without all being under one roof, like a walkable neighborhood.

Madame Aronow

@Obdurodon oooo walkable neighborhood is a great analogy!

@aronow Yeah, I usually eventually default to “imagine if Twitter didn’t have anyone advertising and it wasn’t trying to show you particular things on purpose.”

Cara

@aronow But once I start getting into “imagine a lot of towns…” people check out 😂

The tech is always the most boring part of any social media. It's why I'm not on patchwork SSB anymore lol.

I've been opting to relate mastodon to a Twitter styled discord/teams but you can see other server posts through a channel.

Seems to work with those of us too young remember when email services were not interconnected.

@aronow

I consistently find myself falling into this same trap!

@aronow Someone explaining the distributed nature in detail is what made me join in the last 48 hours LOL

@jforjarrod @aronow No surprise, since you’ve got attempted HTML tags and “Techie” in your bio. If I’m going to get my friend group to join, I need to explain it as “Twitter without ads, and Elon Musk can’t ban you because you called him an asshole.”

I felt that. Seems like ppl that don’t want to know anything about technology end up on big tech social platforms. The rest of us are here. And I think I’m ok with that, to a certain extent.
