This is the northern rose window from Notre-Dame de Paris. I was there not that long before the fire. Amazingly, it seems as though all the stained glass in this photo actually survived the conflagration. This window was first made in about 1250, and most of the original glass is still in place.

In the #PBS series "Nova," there's an episode about how France is rebuilding the #NotreDameCathedral. It said that the original North Rose Window design had the circular design turned a bit on its side, in order to increase its structural integrity.

The show (full episode in link) was a fascinating episode about the craftsmen and detailed work involved in resurrecting the iconic fire-damaged church.

@RickGaehl This was my zoom background during lockdown. Thank you, I didn’t know they survived the fire

Yes, it's hard to believe after watching the flames on TV, but really it was just the roof structure that was lost.

@RickGaehl I was in Paris a few years back and was gobsmacked by how little of the building had survived. It really is a reconstruction, actually a re-synthesis.

I can't find her right now, but on twitter there is, or was, a lady who seemed to be an expert who claimed that the basic design for European Cathedrals is from Syrian models, and was brought back to Europe by Crusaders

The idea that Gothic architecture was derived from what he called 'Saracen' architecture was first mooted by Christopher Wren. However, it probably makes more sense to see it as a development of the Romanesque style; the key difference in early Gothic being the introduction of the pointed arch. In any case, the earliest Gothic buildings pre-date the Crusades. It is possible, however, that Moorisah influence, from Spain, played a part.
