The version of the emulator (VLM) in this release is an unofficial port created by translating the Alpha assembler version to C. It has some serious problems. (E.g., some clock related functionality runs at about 3x speed.)

The VLM has now been ported to Intel and ARM assembler code. Also, Genera itself has been rebuilt and contains numerous improvements, including NFSv3 and NFSv4 support. Genera now identifies itself as Genera 9.0.5, Open Genera 3.0.5, and …

... Portable Genera 2.0.5. (The latter refers to the Intel and ARM emulators.)

I'm still waiting for permission from the Symbolics IP owner to make this version available. 🤞

@gmpalter @lisp_discussions Is it possible to make it a GPL/MIT/BSD-licensed release?

I’m fairly certain that the IP's owner won’t do that. However, he has indicated that he's willing to make it available for non-commercial use.

@surabax @lisp_discussions @gmpalter any way to convince them otherwise? It's a huge piece of history that belongs in the commons.

@dthompson @surabax @lisp_discussions @gmpalter Baby steps. Also I think he used to make a decent bit of money on service contracts at least into the 2010's.

That’s David Schmidt and he’s not the owner of the IP.

The owner isn’t DB from ExperTelligence, is it? I worked for them in the 1984-85 timeframe. Fantastic experience! I remember going to a big Symbolics party during IJCAI ‘85 in Los Angeles. I’d love to see at least some of the Symbolics IP become open source.

It’s not DB. I don’t feel comfortable naming the actual owner.

Understood. I look forward to watching this play out. It could be very interesting. But, I'm 60 so let's keep it moving, lol.

Here’s the VLM running on my Mac mini (M2 Pro). (Screen size chosen to keep the image size reasonable.)
