"We are in the 3rd business model era of the internet. Everything had to be free. Then everything was ad-driven ... now we have seen the limits of this... maybe we should pay for what we value."

@J12t @mike @coachtony This is, in part, why I diversified one of our websites into print in 2004 (might have been a first? I know there was Yahoo! Internet Life before us, but I think that was licensing). Many could see the limits then with online advertising and it has worsened in the last 20 years.

@coachtony gives this advice when exploring the fediverse as a business:

"Give up all the growth hacking nonsense. The Fediverse is a place to go make real relationships."

@J12t @coachtony @mike public television model? public radio model? public social medium model? hosted by your local library? tax me for that, please, I'd still volunteer a few weekends to babysit that infrastructure.

Worthless information wants to be free. Valuable information wants to be dear.

@Freedman

I prefer to think of it this way:

information that is good for you is dear.

Information that is good for somebody else, at your expense, is given to you for free.
