We definitely can.

The important point is whether or not we do.

I think that it's important to analyze the motivations of people who seek to cut off fedi connections. I've seen a lot of drama within the past year that's rooted in self-interested actors seeking to manipulate the network.

I think a good question for network operators to ask themselves when confronted with loud voices demanding action is "what am I afraid they'll do if I don't do what they want?"
