The third-largest state in Germany has an official #mastodon server.

bawü.social/about

(With an umlaut in its domain name!)

Imho all #governments in all countries on all levels should communicate via the #fediverse, instead of via commercial services. Why should a profit-maximizing feed #algorithm, and an ad placement algorithm get between the citizen and their government in a democracy?

@J12t it would be cool to have a map of all the cities, regions, and countries that have an official Mastodon server.

@evan a #lemmy group that only collects links to government-operated servers? Plus some metadata (insert some magic here) that links those to geography / jurisdiction, from which a map can be rendered, and perhaps Wikipedia could be populated…. Just thinking out loud.

@J12t
That description made me think of linked data in @wikidata - they likely have all the geopolitical entities in the database already.
And quite a number of Mastodon instances, while we're at it:

@J12t @evan Unfortunately, there aren't many mastodon instances with country data in wikidata yet:

@J12t @udob They didn’t name it theländ.social? :wombat:

Great idea. There should however be at least an alias without the umlaut. There may be many people who'd like to access accounts there that don't have a keyboard that makes umlauts easily available.

@J12t All democratically elected governments of the free world should be active on their own Mastodon instances - it's a matter of credibility, integrity & honesty.

@slcw Technically "Länder" (plural of "Land") but quite comparable to US states.

@J12t I think it should also come with basic ISP services like email. I'm not saying you should be forced to use them but that should come in the basic service level that are in many places now considered an essential service, like power and telephony.

And on the plus side the instances should be fairly easy to moderate since you can't just register a new account if you get blocked (it would be tied to your ISP account).
