@nixCraft I once moved one wire on a DEC VAX 11/750 backplane to install a new terminal board. The tech practically turned white when he arrived and it was working. The backplane looked a lot like this.

Connect four game box graphic with two kids, but it has been edited so they have a tiny server rack in between and are rewiring lan cables.
The title has been edited to "Connect Port" and the subtitle to "The whole network is fucked, man"

@nixCraft in a previous job I was faced with either taking redundancy or having several other roles mixed into my existing job description, one of which would have been to take on the management of three separate Comms rooms.
This was the most well managed one:

@emccormickva @nixCraft I should probably have added a content warning

@ieatfog @nixCraft I was a part timer jack of all trades guy for a small private university in a previous life. The server room looked like this. There was a light on on one of the ports. The IT director didn't know what it was so he asked me to track it down.

It was a loopback warning. One port was plugged into another.

Well... I had fun playing a preview of a #boardgame called Speedport. It's played with real RJ45 patch cables: "Speedport is a dexterity game, where all that matters is your speed. Players must create patterns on their boards using cables, and only the fastest will win!"

There's also a more strategic game called Clickport, but I didn't have a chance of playing that.

@nixCraft Is there even a win scenario for this game?

@nixCraft I used to manage a Performance Lab at a VOIP company. Most of the company's labs looked like this, but not our's. The one exception was when we let some engineers install an ethernet switch on their own, which they installed UPSIDE DOWN and they ran most of the cables through the middle of the rack. :eyeroll: 😆
