@onlmaps This map fails to explain how these borders *look* on the ground. I took a tram in Alsace that crossed the German/French border, and only one time did border guards get on to check people's passports.

I regularly lead a bike ride that has everyone asking "Wait, when did we enter Belgium from France?" and I answer "You didn't see the road signs change? It was back there!" Some folks live in one country but their local shops are in another, on the other side of that red line. It's not a Big Deal like it is in the Anglo-fash-o-sphere.

@onlmaps
Looks like some alternate history version of the division of Charlemagne's empire

@onlmaps from the top comment: "Maybe it should be added that these are not universal controls but that border guards pick out only some individuals to check them."

@onlmaps I crossed from Hungary and Slovakia and back on a bike a few days ago. There was nobody controlling anything. Saw cops hiding under a bridge once though :)

@onlmaps lot of replies to this talking about the situation as a snapshot in time.
What's sad is the loss of momentum after several decades of feeling like freedom of movement around Schengen and Europe generally was improving
