@AndyGER @gamingonlinux Correction: It's a Steam Deck with a .4" larger OLED screen with full HDR support (unlike the Switch), a 10wH larger battery and generally up to 2x the battery life. It also has 6E wifi which is a lot faster than the previous models, and the Bluetooh/WiFi radios are now separated. RAM speed is also a pinch faster. In addition, the cooling has been adjusted to run cooler and quieter. @jaco @gamingonlinux Okay.Srill sceptical that HDR is such an impact on a small screen. 2x battery life? Waiting for real life numbers ... ;-) @AndyGER @gamingonlinux "up to", it will vary based on things like whether a game is CPU/GPU bound, etc - anyway, here's a test with one game. (grabbed from the LTT video). Valve only claimed 30-50% increase in battery afaik, will need to look it up. @AndyGER @gamingonlinux The screen? It's 7.4" - Just watch Liam's video, he likely covers all of this. @gamingonlinux Hey Liam, thanks for the quick update. I would be mostly interested in the new screen, cooling system/fan (!), d-pad and sticks but don't want to switch out my whole deck for that. Will there be any DIY upgrade options since it's the same case? If you have any infos on that (or can get them from Valve somehow), please share them in detail. :) @gamingonlinux I have an overwhelming urge to order the limited edition even though I really shouldn't. The red-and-black colors and translucent shell are so tempting. I'm curious about their claims of less fan noise and massively longer battery life. Would love to see a comparison or something. Probably can't measure fan noise in a video but I'd like to just know whether it really is quieter/cooler. @gamingonlinux The fact that you don't focus on hardware, that you don't compare memory size with other devices, that you don't count processing units in the APU, is actually fantastic! The fact that you focus on games (real usage), that you explain Proton, Wine, explain compatibility problems is fantastic. @gamingonlinux To me it seems Valve has taken right lesson from Android phones market. Yes, it is possible to release new model every year, but the only result will be lack of software support. Till now, Steam Deck is receiving great software support. They shouldn't change that. @gamingonlinux what I‘m interested in: does the fan run less on low TDP settings. For example Yakuza 0 or Alan Wake run at 30 fps and TDP 10/1000 Mhz and the fan is running only in a few scenes. I don‘t habe good suggestions how to benchmark/test case this. But I do hope the better thermal design helps. Reason: in bedroom gaming. |
@gamingonlinux Well, it's a Steam Deck with an OLED display.
Like a Nintendo switch with an OLED display it is nice but it's nothing spectacular.
It is not a #steamdeck to still ... ;-) #valve
