death to all websites that display 50000 different in-page pop-ups just to be annoying as fuck

- no, i do not consent to your tracking cookies;
- no, i do not want to sign up for your newsletter;
- no, i will not disable my malware/adblocker;
- no, i will not enable push notifications;
- i don’t give a damn that you changed your “privacy” policy, this is the first time i viewed opened your website anyway;
- i don’t care if this site looks better in the app, fix your fucking website then;
- oh, i need chrome to view this page? what year are we in, 2000?;
- i no longer want to read the full article if it means i have to create account;
- and no, i do not want to sign in with my nonexistent google account either

for fucks sake

@nilsding you know what's even funnier?

when you disable JS and the site works as expected.

some even have the premium thing only in JS, meaning you can circumvent that.

@pixel @nilsding

Unfortunately I've run into a equal number of websites which fail spectacularly when js, adblock, etc are disabled.

Andy

@RussSharek @nilsding most are clever about it, but the occassional outlier that just has easy to bypass paywalls is fun.

Agreed on loving the sport, though at times I simply want to whatever it is I'm doing and get on with it.

> no, i do not consent to your tracking cookies

I love #Geizhals so much for this. Just a single Popup on a timer '"Do not Track"-Mode detected. We will only store necessary cookies.'

Gold gab ich für Eisen

@pludikovsky @nilsding which kind of "necessary" cookies could ever be if you don't log in there, just read the info from it?

William Conner

@nilsding AMEN! Cannot move away from that kind of site fast enough.

The news nowadays:
Header, Title, first paragraph all say the same thing.
5 commercials
A quote
1 commercial
Another couple sentences
An ad
One sentence
A half-page ad
A sentence
2 ads
A conclusion
50 pages of ads

@nuncio @nilsding

I was reading the Salt Lake Tribune online (pointed to by a Reddit blog). Adware said 106 Ads, trackers, and pop-ups. Brave browser reported 19 trackers.

I don't know what that is, but it ain't news.

Dr. Eric J. Fielding, PhD

@JHB17 @nuncio @nilsding I only use the Brave browser to visit news sites these days. It blocks enough of the pop-ups to make most sites readable. Don’t tell anyone, but it also blocks ads on YouTube.

Jeph :verified:

@EricFielding @JHB17 @nuncio @nilsding If you use Firefox, one of my favorite extensions is 'Auto Skip Youtube Ads' which isn't a blocker, instead it clicks skip ad the second it appears automagically.

@nilsding

Also tell us your location! No? Can we send you push notifications? Maybe later??

Danny Boling ☮️

@jamiemccarthy

It's the "maybe later" thing that drives me nuts. I turned off notifications in settings but when websites bypass that with the "maybe later" thing, it defeats the whole purpose for turning notifications off to begin with. ggrrr.

@nilsding

Just enable 'reader mode' by default and all this stuff disappears!

Can someone put music to this and make it our new national anthem?

@shansterable @nilsding

I was hearing "No Scrubs" by TLC while reading this. Need to work on the scansion a bit.

@nilsding I will never not be mad at the enshittification of the web

Mina

@nilsding

You forgot:

I don't want to get push messages from this site.

Beko Pharm

@nilsding so much this.

One of the reasons mine humbly asks you to ENABLE an ad blocker 😁

The Filth Hound

@nilsding well said, l hate how websites and corporations are always pushing to use the app, fuck that.

Mycotropic

@nilsding

I'm also not interested in a car wash either.

Victoria M Adams

@nilsding I'm kind of digging this version of TLC's No Scrubs

Alan Langford

@nilsding This has made me think about creating a brand spanking new Google account (in a private/ingognito window) every single time I get asked to log in with my Google account...

Jennifer

@nilsding yesssss. Also, if you embed 15 ads in the text I'm probably going to stop reading.

@nilsding noscript / scriptsafe does wonders. If basic content doesn't load after enabling their own site, I drop.

Neblib 🥥🌴

@nilsding that being said, even some of the worst offenders suprisingly still have a decent RSS or Atom feed with actual content.

@nilsding @nitot have you ever heard about our Lord Holy "Consent-o-Matic" browser extension ?

Erik Ableson

@nilsding I’m getting close to the point of auto addding these sites to my pihole just so I don’t get angry every time a link takes me there. I’d rather have a connection failure

Tanguy ⧓ Herrmann

@nilsding this can't make me move fast enough to gemini.
Good Lord. This cripples every website so much it makes me want to stop working in tech.

I'm not so much a "it was better before", but, it was wayyyyy better before. So much cognitive load just for a stupid article.

www.bloodoutofstone.com

@nilsding can be such a headache, same thing rejecting cookie consent on news articles, the number of businesses that get a legitimate interest option mean that constantly being vigilant means your time is stolen or your data, either / or.

Evan Beaver

@nilsding What about notifications about other stuff customers just bought? Need popups for that or nah?

DELETED

@nilsding

I am not really pedantic (!) but that was nine very good reasons that I thoroughly support, but I am just wondering when you are going to post the other 49, 991 reasons?

I wholeheartedly support the nine that you have posted though. 😀

Soweli Lili

@nilsding I have discovered that pages from a simple-looking magazine web site are actually over 80% non-visible stuff like scripts to do popups and menus, and SVG code for clever logos. And trying to replicate styles from print layouts, like side boxes with quotes in them.

DELETED

@nilsding Bypass Paywalls Clean is a great extension

Emil Jacobs - Collectifission

@nilsding number 3 is a great reason to block the website forever from my search results.

gadgetoid

@nilsding preach! I not only deleted all JavaScript from my site, but I added an origin policy explicitly disabling it on behalf of users- just in case some gets leaked/hacked into it 🤣

TeddyKlugs

@nilsding
Yes, yes, YES, to every one of these! So tedious! Do the creators of these annoying sites ever actually surf the web? 🤔

Tim Ward ⭐🇪🇺🔶 #FBPE

@nilsding These days I mostly don't bother with web sites which don't have a "reject all" button as the only thing that needs clicking before the text can be read.

Tim Ward ⭐🇪🇺🔶 #FBPE

@nilsding What would be better would be if I could set a "reject all" option in the browser, so that web sites didn't even need to ask me.

gak 🦀👾🌌☕

@nilsding When I see a full screen popup, I just close the tab. It’s easier to close the tab.

Cyborg Medusa

@nilsding don't forget the chat bots and other chat pop ups 🫨

MajorDouble

@nilsding I blame @mkennedy for being triggered by this post. 😤
