Proton fucking rocks.

A few years back people would laugh in your face for using Linux to play games. Now I'm playing Starfield & Baldur's Gate 3 on Kubuntu without a care in the world, now just remembering I started making a cup of tea a few hours ago because I got sucked in..

I also just recently finished the Titanfall 2 campaign for the first time ever on my Steam Deck and phew, what an experience that was. Worked perfectly too.

@gamingonlinux it was a great game. Underrated even by it's makers. So good to see it running nicely on SteamDeck :blobaww:

@gamingonlinux Protocol three. Protect the pilot. 😭

Games often want you to care for a companion, but few companions are as well written as the initially guarded but doggedly loyal BT. The only video game character I ever bought an action figure of, to stand on my desk.

@gamingonlinux Yeah.... Proton has come a long way! Here's to more gaming with my trusty penguin at my side....🐧

@gamingonlinux I've been Linux only for like 3-4 years now, and I don't even think about how I'm "gaming on Linux" anymore - it's just "gaming" now. Virtually all the games, but without having to deal with Windows.

@gamingonlinux It's absolutely wild how far Linux gaming has come. Wine is BONKERS these days, so rare to run into a title that won't run properly.

Now, if only I could sing similar praises of Steam VR.....

@gamingonlinux Proton made me switch almost full time to Linux since January. Still have one game which will never run (BF2042) but otherwise have had almost no issue (any issue I had was solved by using GE).

@gamingonlinux It's really wild how its basically running games at native speed pretty much all the time.

I've done a comparison for my Unreal game with a native linux build and windows build through proton on my steam deck and found there to be practically no difference.

@gamingonlinux Finally tried out a bit of the old Linux gaming on Chrome OS today for science (and because Lenovo sent us a Chromebook I forgot that I needed to do something with) and you're 100000% right. Even since I started playing around with Linux in 2020 it's come on so far, the absolute business

@gamingonlinux I used to use Linux as my main OS 20 years ago but went to Windows when I had kids and needed gaming friendly OS. Only recently gone back to Linux the last few months and been pleasantly surprised at how easy it's been to get the things I play running.

@gamingonlinux I have game backlog of Elden Rings, Baldurs Gate 3, Diablo 4, Dark Souls 2(my fave), Armoured Core(new and PS3), Forspoken(I like it, want to finish it), 40k: Battlesector, 40k: Boltgun. Metro: Exodus. What I'm playing? STALKER: GAMMA, because I'm apparently in need of punishment...

@gamingonlinux
Yesterday, just for shits, I tried streaming Cyberpunk 2077 from my Linux computer to my Linux Steam Deck, and unsurprisingly it worked without any messing around.
5 years ago that would have been deemed crazy.

@gamingonlinux I'm still kinda internalizing that many of the biggest new games are suddenly available to me on something pretty close to my own terms now.

I literally, well, in order to learn how to live in this OS I had to take a vow of celibacy, whatever else I did, I could not go back to Windows for anything.

This meant no more games, and I just accepted that, cause I had to, or keep driving dumptrucks for the fucking ku klux klan forever.

But now I can work klan-free AND play games. Wow.

Rocko_McDagger

@gamingonlinux I was afraid to switch to Linux due to support concerns but learning about Proton and Wine, plus having to deal with Windows 11 at work, changed that.

egostra

@gamingonlinux I remember the first time I heard of proton and that The Witcher 3 runs with that. It was amazing 😌

FaustinoVonner

@gamingonlinux my experience has been pretty garbage with proton and gamescope. And it's mostly nvidia's fault. Anything after proton 8+ stopped working and gamescope shows black screen on Wayland.
