I'm looking forward to 1993
Edit: some context:
- This wasn't a proposal for a european rail network, it's a rough transfer of the London Underground map to Europe
- It does show that the eurostar would go from a lot of UK stations, a plan that was sadly cancelled

@yaxu It was going to be so awesome!
I really miss the future we had back then...

@odoruhako @yaxu It was so good. Or rather it would have been so good.

Just imagine being able to get from London to Lisbon with one change.

@SteveClough @odoruhako to be fair you can get to Barcelona with one change

Schroedinger

@yaxu @odoruhako Oh, I didn't know that.

BUt something like this, which would be a celebration of Europe would have been brilliant.

@yaxu @SteveClough
I guess if you ignore the part of how you get from Gare du Nord to Gare de Lyon in Paris you can count that as one change.

But in other parts of the diagram the deviations from current reality are way bigger, that's for sure.

@odoruhako @yaxu We once flew to Portugal for a holiday, and it struck me that we could have done that by train to Lisbon (we hired a car anyway, for while we were there).

I feel that it would have made us more unified.

@yaxu a poster for @jon (though i suspect he’s already seen it)

@yaxu i remember the special trains built for regional through tunnel services. They were used on the Leeds King's Cross route before being returned to France and finally scrapped

@yaxu it's is only missing Old Oak Common Station.. 🙈😉

@yaxu Oeh! Directly from Amsterdam to Frankfurt. Then directly to Milan and Rome. A very nice idea.

Chip Butty

@yaxu @ianturton that looks like the future I was promised

@yaxu if you delve on Network Rail's website, you can find an archive of Working Time Tables going back to 1994. the earliest ones include the Nightstar sleeper services and the North Of London Eurostars, with an asterisk indicating the workings are provisional

@yaxu Love how there is no way to get from Bordeaux to Toulouse without going through two other cities first.

Sean

@yaxu Me too. 1993 will be a good year 😉

@yaxu These are the Renfe direct destinations from Spain to France. It has taken only a few years...

@yaxu
I was looking forward to catching a sleeper in Edinburgh or Glasgow and waking up in Paris!

@yaxu the amsterdam-hamburg bit also didn't happen. But politicians said last year that there'll be a direct train in 2035!

Skye

@yaxu Can't wait for the Montpellier Barcelona line to be affordable. Or a second Eurotunnel on Stockholm-Mariehamn
