@sezduck because Amazon isn't making enough money /s

DELETED

@sezduck@twit.social Increase revenues? I thought they already had all the revenues.

Connie Ko

@sezduck remember not so long ago when people wanted to stop paying for cable and stream only?

Alisdair Calder McGregor

@sezduck @goatsarah It's amazing how many of these companies don't realise that their business model is "be more convenient than Piracy"

Sarah Brown
@A_C_McGregor @sezduck And piracy is really getting very convenient these days.
SallyStrange

@A_C_McGregor @sezduck @goatsarah I bet they're counting on increased obstacles to piracy, e.g. KOSA

Sarah Brown
@Guillotine @A_C_McGregor @sezduck I might have the slightest twinge of guilt about it if they weren’t such utterly greedy “Smaug on his gold pile”-style cunts.
Brian Vastag

@sezduck I'm not convinced the giant entertainment companies care about piracy.

Joanna Holman

@sezduck @Gargron was going to digitally rent a new release. The two day rental cost was 20% more than it cost me to see the film in my local cinema and they aren’t a cheap cinema either. Needless to say didn’t rent it

Drakon

@sezduck I’m actually slowly returning back to just buying shows and movies on disc. It slowly becomes cheaper again than having to sub 4 or 5 services. And even then, the movie you wanna watch is on none of them…

garland

@Drakon @sezduck Me too, but unfortunately a lot of new stuff is not being released on physical media.

@sezduck wtf is with these mega company with billionaire CEOs driving up prices and inflation? Do they not have enough nesting doll yachts? Is it some never-ending dick measuring contest? (Literally for Musk)

You'd think at some point they'd realise that no matter how much money they earn, they will never fill that emptiness inside where their soul used to be.

absolutejank

@chloetse @sezduck I’ve given this idea some thought too, and I’ve personally come to the conclusion that after a certain point, capitalism stops being about the money. I think it even stops being about the gaudy displays of wealth. I think for many capitalists that reach the final stages it comes down to how much power and influence they can exert over people with their decisions. So a dick-measuring contest, like you said.

geekwonk

@chloetse @sezduck

bill gates got to spend like a decade fucking up american education because he felt like it and he had the money. then he moved on to the next hobby.

i’ll bet the yachts are nice but bank account interest can pay for those. these folks crave power.

@sezduck@twit.social
buy it. rip it. put it on a stick. watch anywhere

Chris Wu :toucan:

@sezduck i’d also like to mention how Paramount+ inserts unskippable 50 second promos before their shows on their “ad free“ plan.

Matthew Green

@MuseumShuffle @sezduck I hate that so much. I refuse to watch ads. I won’t even watch the FAST services like Tubi or Freevee. Waste of my time and they are obnoxious.

Chris Wu :toucan:

@PressTheButtons @sezduck if they had a skip button, I wouldn’t care. The fact that they force you to watch something that long over something you most likely don’t care about over and over again is unbelievably asshole design.

Matthew Green

@MuseumShuffle @sezduck It’s the same mentality behind The Algorithm telling us what to watch instead of just letting us watch what we want. They have to show us their latest multimillion dollar bomb nobody asked them to make.

🌱 Ligniform :donor:

@sezduck seeing this stuff always just makes me want to raise the flag 🏴‍☠️

Holly🍁:mstdn:

@sezduck Exactly this. Buy a good VPN for $80/year or subscribe to a few streaming platforms for $80/month. I’m currently paying the streaming fees because I want them to continue to create content, but there’s a line and it’s getting close.

campbell

@sezduck The sheer number of things that cost money in these screenshots

Khitomer's Hamster

@sezduck I wait for it to come out on dvd then check it out from my local library. If it doesn’t come out on dvd I don’t watch it. I ❤️ my library.

A. Rivera

@khitomers_hamster @sezduck

I second that. I get it on DVD from my local library. Otherwise, I don't worry. I know I can always find something at the library.

C.S.Strowbridge

@sezduck
Two points:

1.) Apparently Usenet is making a comeback and this could be one of the reasons why.
2.) If there's no legal way to watch a movie, then is it really pirating? No. It's archiving.

Bradley :smugcat:

@sezduck Literally just told my wife we're going to find other ways to watch the new season of AHS because Hulu isn't worth $18 a month.

Martin

@sezduck
I'm not gonna pay a subscription to receive access to ads.
If I want to watch videos on a platform full of ads, I'll go on YouTube.

Byte

@sezduck

Thanks for the reminder that I can talk about this here

J.I. Vicuña

@sezduck Doesn’t help that the Trek thing is only for the US. P+ in South America only has ENT, PIC, DIS, LD, and just added TNG last month. I think the rest are either on Netflix or Amazon Prime. And PRO is not available anywhere (not even on the Nickelodeon app).

Federico Damián Schonborn

@sezduck

> how to save

pirate.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

J. "Henry" Waugh

@wagesj45 @sezduck for just dealing with this, rather than actual tech threats? Not much

While I don't give recommendations, you can see them advertised anywhere from equal to half most of those streaming services *individually*

jordan

@jhwgh1968 my previous strategy was just waiting for things to come out on DVD or Blu Ray, but that seems to be a thing of the past as more and more production companies are skipping physical releases.

Fight Fascism

@sezduck PBS Passport for as little as five bucks a month you not only support the US gem PBS but also gain access to a plethora of ad free programming including tons of international options. Shout out to Walters Choice. #PBS

J. "Henry" Waugh

@sezduck image 3: "with cost of streaming services going up, how to save."

... Did they give the correct answer? 😉

c0debabe, sleepy raccoon

@sezduck its that scene dfeom Archer but pirates not ants.

J.V. West

@sezduck Amen. I mean, we already pay a premium for Prime... you gotta throw ads in there too? WTF? Is the quarterly profits arrow just not high enough to satisfy the freakin' dragon?

Peter Kisner ≈

@JVWest @sezduck

Once you've already made the service as good as it can reasonable get, how else are you going to keep making *increasing* returns to shareholders quarter after quarter?
You gotta start cutting costs or seeking additional rents elsewhere.
Reduce service quality of you have to, but always seek those rents.
Line goes up is good. Line always has to go up.

Lenora

@sezduck I save money by not paying for any streaming service

Zagone

So disappointing. And to think we all thought we were paying in order to escape ads.

@sezduck

AndrewFelix 🐀 🇵🇸

@sezduck there are people on Fiverr who will help you build your own media server behind a firewall that can stream literally any show you want. Cannot recommend it enough.

Aral Balkan

@sezduck Bread and circuses… only you can’t afford the bread. Or the circuses.

Pterry

@aral @sezduck you are told that the bread has been taken by immigrants/single moms/some other marginalized group. The ensuing circus is entirely for upper class...

El Pamplina 🇺🇦 :cadiz:

@sezduck
Nothing like capitalism to squeeze to death everything that works well.

Melanie (they, she)

@sezduck this way they can tell the creatives that it's our fault they can't pay them living wages. Divide the workers into hostile camps.

Erik Schlicksbier

@sezduck Physical media distributers do it the same way nowadays. Cargo Pictures for example. DVD without any real bonus material 25€, Bluray 30€. Not even a mediabook. Simple keep cases 🤯. I want the time back with cool labels like Hongkong Legends from the UK …

James 🌈💜

@sezduck
Whilst doing their best to keep all those ever-increasing revenues out of the hands of the people who actually made the things. Like writers and actors.

nachtpfoetchen (jellyfish era)

@sezduck @amberage Streaming platform executives in a year: Pirating hurts our revenues super bad! We need more drm!

certified computer toucher

@sezduck @nachtpfoetchen “options are very limited”

I don’t think that setting up a VPN connection and going to 1337x.to and downloading whatever is “limiting”, but ok

MONOCHROME

@sezduck "Amazon will start putting ads?"

It already does for us, Ads are about the shows in Prime Itself, and prime keeps forcing users to *subscribe* to more shit through prime video 🤡

It's pretty sad.

Axel Rafn

@sezduck Yeah, I've seen the skull and bone being hoisted up all around me, wondering when I should don my hat as well.

Carl-Henrik Barnekow

@sezduck after being upset with #StarTrekDiscovery was removed from #Netflix I got upset. Was looking forward to the new season. So I waited to understand what platform I needed to watch it. Paramount+ not being available in Sweden. So they said use SkyShowtime and you get the Paramount+-content. So I did. But no, no #StarTrekDiscovery there. Even if I had a good deal (50% cost) I cancelled it. Watched what I wanted but my main reason wasn’t there. No need to continue paying then!

localzuk

@sezduck the consequences of growth imperative laid bare.

Lord Caramac the Clueless, KSC

@sezduck I have never stopped pirating movies, been pirating for over 20 years. Nobody has ever deleted anything from my hard drives other than me, I can still watch movies and series that aren't currently legally available anywhere anymore. I also download all the videos from Youtube, Vimeo, Dailymotion, etc., that I find remarkable, to keep them safe for later. I have seen too much cool stuff disappear.
