So if Musk really goes ahead with user charges for X, there will be tens of millions of users looking to move elsewhere. Bluesky is still invite-only, and Threads seems pretty lame (plus, both are for-profits that could go the same way as X). So admins of Mastodon instances should get ready for a lot of applications.

@johnquiggin ... sorry, is he planning to make people pay to be on there at all? not just to have the kick me sign - er, sorry, checkmark?

@cxberger @johnquiggin Some wag proposed there was a miscommunication and that the plan was to charge ppl for NOT being on Twitter

@johnquiggin Bluesky's invite codes go to existing users, so they've set themselves up for exponential growth without being "open." This has been visible with botnets for a few weeks.. dunno if you follow Norteno, he's the source for that. Anyway, there have been a ton of codes handed out today :D

@mjfgates

Growth through automated referral is a great model for exponential bots, but not so good if you are a random ex-Xer looking to move to Twitter.

He should limit membership to females 18 to 24 who want to replicate with his sea monkeys. He would have to double up and maybe triple up maybe, like for example at some point he will have to name a kid AAA, ASS, FOO, ETC, etc. Then he can put a huge neon sign on his HQ spot that reads "I put the X in Sex"

@johnquiggin Yeah if that happens it's gonna be a real BRACE FOR IMPACT BRACE BRACE BRACE moment that ... well ... I don't know that we're ready for.

I do note that registration numbers are popping up _already_ tho'
