“Someone with a 1-hr car commute needs to earn 40% more to be as happy as someone with a short walk to work. On the other hand, if someone shifts from a long commute to a walk, their happiness increases as much as if they’d fallen in love.” #CityMakingMath

@BrentToderian Like most people I harbour dreams of how happy I'd be out an acreage somewhere. But unlike most people i know it's a delusion that would probably ultimately cause me to get divorced.

Ruby Sinreich

@jasemurphy @BrentToderian I don't dream of that. I moved from being 1 mile from downtown to being about 1.5 miles away and I'm always scheming about how I can get back to where I could walk 15 minutes and be in the center of the city. And I work from home!

(((JaneinNJ)))

@BrentToderian Great in theory. Reality makes it a lot tougher, at least in the NYC area.

Dana Fried

@JaneinNJ @BrentToderian I dunno, it seems like NYC is one of those places you could absolutely not have a *car* commute if you didn't want to.

(((JaneinNJ)))

@tess @BrentToderian Many many people who work in NYC live in NJ, CT, and even PA.

(((JaneinNJ)))

@tess @BrentToderian Not as easy as the map makes it look. Local commuter bus company stopped commuter service earlier this year; NJTransit now runs a small number of commuter buses only during M-F rush hours. Train stations can be a half-hour walk from home with no local public transit. In other words, in many cases, you can’t get to public transit without another vehicle, usually a car.

Berend Schotanus

@BrentToderian And still it’s worthwhile to take a car commute.

Think about that 🤨

Jimbo

@BrentToderian actually I agree. I used to do a long commut for considerably more pay ph. Now my commute is much much shorter and I have more money left at the end of the month. I had no idea how much I ended up spending on petrol and wear and tear on my car...

Jeff Grigg

@Jimellisuk @BrentToderian

And if you're counting "money left at the end of the month", then you are probably *not* counting the *considerable* cost of wear and tear on your car.

@BrentToderian So what we need are more high paying jobs in the city 😂😂🤣 and someone in government with mates to give them to. 🤣 💰

@BrentToderian
And what if it's not a short walk, but like the trek (10km, through the snow and uphill both ways) my parents had to do each day to get to school back in the day?

shentonfreude

@BrentToderian I wonder if the same is true for shipping, entertainment, and other "going out" activities.

Dana Fried

@shentonfreude @BrentToderian as someone who lives in an urban neighborhood with most of those things, yes.

Ruby Sinreich

@tess @shentonfreude @BrentToderian Yep. I work from home but I still live in an urban neighborhood and walk everywhere I can.

Alt text: happy people walking on the sidewalk, one has a doggie; across the intersection there are shops and trees

Kneonspace

@BrentToderian So if you can't find a women you just need move next to your work to be happy?

@BrentToderian
The idea of commuting is actively militating against my getting another job. I'm on the verge of retiring; this might yet push me over the edge.

Jimmy Havok

@BrentToderian How about motorcycling? I had a half hour commute in LA, when I switched to a motorcycle my happiness doubled. At least.

.carla

@jhavok @BrentToderian requires adequate rain gear, but yes... I agree two wheels is pretty magic.

Adrianna Tan

@BrentToderian My commute in San Francisco is a 3 min slow bike ride down a bike lane. You couldn’t pay me any amount of money to go back to a 2h one way commute

CurtAdams

@BrentToderian IOW, get a short walking commute and you'll fall in love with it.

Ned Yeung

@BrentToderian Meanwhile, someone with a bicycle commute is happy no matter how long it takes. #yegbike

it's B! Cavello 🐝

@BrentToderian image description (you may be able to update your post): people walking and standing at a crosswalk intersection on sunny day. There are also two people crouching to pet dogs or adjust bags of groceries.

Dom

@BrentToderian Also, people with a 1hr driving commute will often be angered when their environment is modified to help people have a 20 min walking or cycling commute.

Add a public transit path to increase the speed of bus commute?
- Drivers get angry that there's less space for cars and often illegally use that reserved way and then complain that buses are not fast enough.

Remove parking spaces to add a bike path and facilitate cycling commute?
- Drivers get angry and park on the bike path.🙄

@BrentToderian @asymco Cool! Now I just need to find a walkable city in the US that I can raise my family in that isn’t economically oppressive.

alster
@BrentToderian Neat, if there weren't rent and public transport.
Rent without a commute whould be double for the same flat/apartment, but the cost for transport whould be the same or nothing. But it's already lower than renting a place near the work place.

@mekkaokereke
Once my commute was a walk to a ferry, and then a walk to the job. It was wonderful

Jim Rea

@BrentToderian I’ve been walking to the next room for a couple of decades. It’s true, it makes me quite happy! 👍

Kerr Avonsen

@BrentToderian Does not surprise me. There was a short period when my place of work was 15 minutes walk from where I lived, and it was great.
