@frozencat As Google has grown more entrenched and bureaucratic, its products are getting demonstrably worse. With Google being a powerhouse, there are entire industries built around gaming their systems, and those industries finally seem to be winning. The data in search and maps is growing less useful by the day.

And on top of that, Google isn't afraid to monetize every drop of data it can extract from you, and some people find that distasteful.

@frozencat @smallcircles Whats wrong with a company that is better like intelligence in spying on you - for commercial reasons? Also Googles location service has nothing to do with GPS, which is much more precise.

@frozencat @smallcircles From a practical angle, Google Maps is becoming more and more visibly enshittified: the places that are shown on the map are certainly not the places I want to go, but seem to be prioritised by some opaque commercial concerns, and the map is hidden by interface clutter.

Compare these two screenshots of the same location.

A screenshot of Organic Maps centred on Dalston. A variety of shops and venues are visible.
A screenshot of the same area in Google Maps. Far fewer shops and venues are visible; those that are have ad text attached. The map is obscured by interface clutter.
