There's a lot of fuss over the Starfield "Steam Deck Essentials" mod, but it keeps repeatedly massively breaking the game. Don't use it.

It breaks lighting, has broken saves etc. Not worth it.

@gamingonlinux well, what mod doesn't break a Bethesda game? :p

@gamingonlinux They made a change in one of the updates for the mod that modifies the reflections config on the low setting and that is what's causing the lighting to be funky, from what I can tell.

@smalls last time I tried it, the game was nearly pitch black and i've seen numerous comments about it breaking save loading at times too

@gamingonlinux Yup! If you bump reflections to medium it "fixes" the pitch black problem. I haven't ran into any save loading issues myself, but I wouldn't be surprised with some of the updates the modder has made that broke it. I really don't like the INI tweaks because, even when the lighting does work, it breaks shadows entirely.

I'm personally just using the compressed textures portion of it and I've been tweaking the INI files myself for the graphics presets separately. The compressed textures help a lot with VRAM utilization and has little impact on texture quality. At this point I'm getting Fallout 4 on console levels of performance . 😅
