@muzzle exactly. And, to be blunt, it was more usable in many ways. Such as actually keeping track of conversations.

@J12t But Pandora's box is open. I expect countless freedumb folks are signing up right now, ready to make the post-AOL cesspool look like a royal tea party.

I'll go back sometime after they require a DNA sample to post.

@J12t it's absolutely wild that people charge ~$10/mo for usenet access alone

Hmmm. I wonder if all the alt.tv fandom discussions might come back from the dead?

On the other hand, hope RTS doesn’t figure out how to sign up for Mastodon. He was notorious in the abuse-report groups

@J12t the article claims usenet is decentralized and p2p, which it's not. It's a closed federation - you can't run your own server that is equal to all other servers in the federated. It has nothing P2P (federated is not P2P).

We need real modern alternative for USENET that's open federation and properly federated. Maybe it's over activitypub or Matrix. It could also be bridged with oldschool USENET and web forums.

@J12t for some of us - USENET never went away

@J12t people stopped using usenet for reasons. among them the lack of (scaling) moderation, turning many groups into toxic environments just second to 4chan et al.
plus in countries with "active jurisdictions" the operators of usenet servers kept receiving cease and desist letters from doxing victims. newsmaster at an isp turned from a technical job to a content moderator.

@J12t Having read this article, I got on and checked out some random groups (e.g. a fan group for my home state) and they were full of racist slurs in post titles, right wing rants, and drug sale spam. :\
