What do you all think we do here in the #fediverse?

Is it “#social #media”? (It doesn’t sound quite right to me: I post “media” only rarely)

Is it “social #networking”? (Not sure, it’s different from offline networking, and I feel networked already even without the fediverse)

I’ve been playing with the term “social #communications”: I’m here to communicate with you all, but not 1-on-1, but socially, where everybody else can overhear what’s being said.

What to you think of the term?

@J12t

I've said before that masto is kind of a big public group chat.

Maybe "syndicated group chat"?

Johannes Ernst

@BillySmith I can see the WSJ headline: "New socialist gossip network threatens serious business conversations world-wide"

@J12t “What do we think we do here in the #fediverse ?”

Create norms in order to share use of a global #social #commons for diverse communities and purposes.

Johannes Ernst

@Roundtrip Hmm, please bear with me: I'm not following. Can you say the same thing on a 3rd-grade language level?

@J12t

How‘s this:

Find ways to share a global online space for different groups and purposes

@J12t I’m on here to socially network with people of shared purpose ☺️

Johannes Ernst

@erlend when you say, “socially network” (as a verb), what does that mean to you?

Erlend Sogge Heggen

@J12t I’m socializing more so than I’m networking. I hesitate to use ‘network’ as a verb for human activity.

A network that grows its connections is networking. I as a social human creature socialize. When I use a network to connect with other people one might call that networking (and I do sometimes), but I separate my humanity from the system whenever possible.

The fediverse is a social network and we interact with and through it, but what we DO here is socializing, mobilizing & organizing.

@J12t "Social networking" sounds about right!

@astrojuanlu when you say, “socially network” (as a verb), what does that mean to you?

Juan Luis

@J12t To connect, to talk, to interact, to reply. Sure it's not like having beers with someone, but I see it as some sort of networking too.

A medium is nothing more than a material used to convey ideas. Paint and canvas are a medium. Video is a medium. Words are a medium, whether displayed on paper or a screen.

So this is absolutely a social medium. (It's only one, so the singular medium would be more appropriate than the plural media, I suppose.)

@J12t

@EverydayMoggie Interesting! Your interpretation of what "social media" is referring to is quite different from mine. I thought the "media" was the multimedia content shared along the social network, and that's also why it is plural.

In either case of the interpretation of the noun, what would you say the verb is? What do we do here?

moggie

I'd say we talk, in all the hues that can encompass. We converse, we commiserate, we debate, we teach, we joke, we analyze, we share, we refine ideas.

Honestly, it had never occurred to me to define it any further than I'd define a chat with a neighbor. It's just that this neighborhood is bigger and I get to choose my neighbors.
