Esther is looking for a server

If you actually want people to read long-form stuff you write, don’t put it on Medium. Just don’t.

There’s a whole bunch of alternatives, like these WriteFreely instances that are part of the Fediverse (the network that Mastodon also in a part of)

writefreely.org/instances

There’s also WordPress.com which has a pretty good free tier. wordpress.com/

There’s GitHub Pages which works pretty well too, if you don’t mind a little technical involvement. docs.github.com/en/pages/quick

There’s tons of affordable paid providers too. You get a lot for the cost of one bubble tea per month.

And of course there’s the option to run your own site, which is probably easier and cheaper than you think. It’s worth giving it some thought.

But whatever you do: definitely keep a copy of your writing in a place you control, even if it’s just a bunch of text files. You never known when or for what you’ll need it.

@esther for those who choose to run their own site, backdrop is a very decent and lightweight PHP-based CMS and what my blog currently runs on:

backdropcms.org/

@esther I'm very much in favour of just running an ordinary static website, which is really not difficult at all.

@esther @ainmosni it is a little bit ironic that @doctorow keeps writing on the ultimate enshittified platform, medium

skze

@esther neocities and noblogs also decent free blogging platforms

@esther Ghost is a good alternative, though currently not part of the Fediverse.

@esther neocities as well, you get 1 GB of disk space and your own *.neocities.org subdomain.

HTML/CSS/JS only, no PHP or nothing, but it works fine for blogging, for the moderately HTML-savvy.

@esther lesson learned when I lost all of my newsletter contacts and content, when Revue shut down without warning

@esther id join writefreely but i never know what instance to choose, even moreso here than for mastodon or other services

@esther I use Patreon to write stuff. If someone's willing to throw in a $1, please know I'm super grateful, not for the money since it's just money, but for the fact that you cared.

In this selfish world, I love and appreciate anyone who cares. ❤️

@esther@strangeobject.space and don’t forget wordpress also has wordpress.org, where you can download the wordpress software and install it anywhere you choose. Free.

@esther I couldn’t be OK with the reuse terms for Wordpress.com (“By uploading or sharing Content, you grant us a worldwide, […] non-exclusive license to use, reproduce, modify, distribute, adapt, publicly display, and publish the Content [for improving the product]”; wordpress.com/tos/). Plus of course a free version is very ad-laden. However, to get a static site set-up is not very easy for the non-techy, although fine once past that initial stage.

@esther I enjoy Ghost. It also has paid subscription features like substack (which I don't use), but it doesn't take a penny from those subscriptions.

@esther Joomla.com is free hosting and fully open source CMS as well. Joomla.org you can download free to host wherever you want as well.
