spin pulled out of Seattle so if you find one, the pi4 inside is fair game

@_ finally, an affordable supply of pis! *drives to Seattle*

JT

@_ I was always interested in the potential for repurposing the batteries.

Ms. Bee-Bop

@_ now waiting for them to hopefully pull out of Pittsburgh so I can build a cheap cluster 🤣

~n

@_ “Tell me you have only moderate in-house embedded skills without saying it out loud.” [presents an rpi4 as the core element of the “architecture”]
Yeah… Fair game to pick them up and bring them to a better place.

Jeremy List

@_ the casing reminds me of an OpenMoko phone (harder to come by these days than a pi)

Jaakko Nissi

@jeremy_list @_ I don't have RPI 4, sadly, but got a RPI 400 if that counts.

stereo griever

@_ holy shit, a whole fucking pi 4 for something like this? this is like they were trying to increase the costs to get people to steal them

DELETED

@selfisekai @_ it almost smells like just deploying identical setups to their prototype models because they couldn't be arsed to develop a custom board imo

stereo griever

@SigmaOne @_ I like to think of it as a form of insurance fraud

DELETED

@selfisekai @_ wouldn't put that past a company like this tbh

SnowFox

@SigmaOne @selfisekai @_ Hey, $8M in VC funding will buy a lot of Pi 4s 😛

The “hat” and sensor board seem custom (I can’t find a similar NimbeLink board), and a Pi doesn’t seem *too* unreasonable given the camera, though I’m slightly bothered by the implication that it needs more image processing than a Pi Zero can do.

(I’m also bothered by the camera. Why does it even need a camera? Who knows!)

artemist

@_ as someone who has worked in hardware design:
lmao

artemist

@_ if you put a full-size raspberry pi in a battery-powered commercial product then they deserve to get stolen

Chrisshy Keygen

@_ AND!!!! After you pull the useless brains out and repurpose it for something useful, you can rig up the rest of it to be a scooter!

Dr. Ferrous

@_ @vitria it does looks like one! Same ribbon cable… what could that be used for on a scooter?

SnowFox

@DrFerrous @_ @vitria Looks like the “NoIR” Camera Module 2: raspberrypi.com/products/pi-no

All the components/markings I’ve spot-checked seem to match, except possibly X1 (it doesn’t looks shiny, but it could just be reflecting the case). It doesn’t match v1.3 (which has unrounded corners) or v3 (which has a larger chip).

crumbcake

@_ It looks like there's already a fair bit of custom PCB work in there, wild that they didn't go for a CM4 (Or even a CM3 if supply availability was an issue).

perigoso

@_ Lmao, I knew these scooter companies were janky, but this still surprised me

lime with barcode

@_ seems optimized for short time to market/landfill

liz ten eleven :tacobelllabs:

@fredy @_ lmao i don't even think i've heard of this particular scooter outfit. until now, when i've just found out that they're abandoning the market

Emma Builds 🚀

@_ OMG, is that where those boards were going?

Jack William Bell

@emma @_

The Pi people have been upfront about servicing industrial and commercial clients first.

And it's still happening.

Drama-free flocking together.

@_ anything useful in this? (Other than 85 or so used 18650s you could resell for $2 each?)

yr

@old_angry_queer new limes are so fucked. don't bother unless u wanna replace the motor controller AND open the battery 🤮

AI6YR

@_ We've reached the stage of #RaspberryPi shortages we're now scavenging them from the detritus strewn on the streets as a result of tech startup hubris?! Amazing.

Drama-free flocking together.

@ai6yr @_ the startup probably went bellyup when the price of pis went up lol.

The Doctor

@ai6yr @_ CPAF, when you think about it. So desperate for hardware that anything that can be ripped apart and salvaged is. Even scooters.

'Spooky' John

@ai6yr @_ "The street finds its own uses for things", right?

kitns & tamsyn & tails, oh my!

@ai6yr @_ that, and it turns out that the RPF just love cops, so giving them money is not the best idea

Arazil

@ai6yr @_ That's a thought straight out of the "Mad Max" cinematic universe.

Nicholas Weaver

@ai6yr @_
Nah, they finally have a good supply chain again. And TBT a good sign of their lack of clue is using Pis and not compute modules.

pounce
@_
do they scream when you move them like the limes
every time they do that i want to throw one off a bridge onto i5 i hate it
nimbius
@_ and remember, the housing takes a security torx wrench.
jeremiah

@_ wait are they just leaving the scooters and not reclaiming them? I think they're out of Pittsburgh too.

F4GRX Sébastien

@_ so thats how the pis are stolen from us.

národní prase
@_ so this is why there was pi shortage
Robin Syl 🌸:blobcatreach:

@_ god damn those are worth at least a kidney nowadays

Melissa :heart_sp_trans:

@_ they put a whole IRL streaming rig in these?? Mannnnn

keschi / cache :blobCat_in_box:

@_ Don't forget about the batteries! You can save that battery for your own scooter or something.

Stapper

@_ I never realised all those scooters are just free e-waste bins....
Time to spend a night in a city and collect some electronics.

great eepe :flag:
@_ upload SD card contents to archive org
Kaisa-Marysia

@_ thinks I always wanted to do.

- Travel to USA
- Destroy things
- Steal things
- get more raspberries

Alex@rtnVFRmedia Suffolk UK

@_ @vantablack @doubleDensity might be worth a look out for if you want a free Rpi or two 😁

geo_bot

@_ You could also rewrite the software on the pi and turn it into your scooter

noi

@_ i have the overwhelming need to rescue them all to live happily ever after in my drawer for a future project i'll never get around to working on

seriously though what an insane amount of e-waste

Nick

@_ so this is where the shortage comes from. Too bad I live in Germany have fun tho.

site reliability erin

@_ please dump the sd card if it’s still not wiped 🥺
