Hobby coders can today implement stuff on spare time that was not achievable for big cooperations with lotsamoney 50 years ago.
Computers are nowadays used by many "ordinary" people (not meaning to imply that such a person exists). You needed to deeply get into computers to use them, 50 years ago.
You call it "thrown away". I call it "made good use of".
