Aerospace: we're still using the essentials of Lockheed-Martin's design work from the 50s and 60s, and having personally gone through the redesign of the Nimitz class aircraft carrier's engine room, the same was true there as well. Redundancy, structural integrity, safety factors - these are all the places where modern engineering has "trimmed the fat", not always with the best operational or safety related results.
