Seeing talk of chrome orbs that will give you crypto in exchange for your biometrics? That's Worldcoin, and and these are some of the risks we would need to consider if it became widespread.

@molly0xfff do you live in SF? or just sourcing images from The Source?

@molly0xfff is Altman just a shill for Nvidia. He just keeps finding ways to burn electricity with GPUs

@molly0xfff I learned of the orbs today (thanks to Hard Fork from NYT, a great podcast) and my take-away was "keep clear of the orbs."

This is just a ploy by A16Z to get people to buy into crypto so they can pump it and buy another island or whatever.

enantiomer

@molly0xfff It's giving Massive Attack "Voodoo In My Blood" music video.

I'd forgotten that whole moment with the eye. Flipping 'eck.

@molly0xfff I'll bet it would cost about 5USD to have a group in one if the impoverished places listed to just show up at a scanning site and TAKE one of those orbs by force so it can be reverse engineered later...

I spent enough time in enough shitholes in the world to say with confidence that a "fiver" will buy anything you want.

For a Benjamin, you'd get the orbs and the orb bearers (condition not insured)

They're playing with stuff they don't understand. I'm at least moderately morale, but I know folks with similar experience and infinitely more "flexibility".

If there's billions? Trillions? of (currency) involved, it's going to attract those folks ( and every lesser hood between)

@molly0xfff see an orb smash an orb. Too easy.

@molly0xfff Even by crypto standards this is a stunning lack of planning:

"There is no ongoing verification process to ensure that a World ID continues to belong to the person who signed up for it, and no way... to recover an account that is under another person’s control. Worldcoin acknowledges that they have no clue how to resolve the issue..."

This tried-and-hopefully-true strategy was honed at OpenAI when someone brought up copyright issues in GPT's training data: 🤷

Doctor Popular

@molly0xfff Cryptograffiti’s biggest issue with Worldcoin seems to be that it uses ethereum instead of bitcoin. “They aren’t using my cryptocurrency of choice? Smash the Orbs!” twitter.com/cryptograffiti/sta

@docpop @molly0xfff crazy-ass internecine warfare: not just for the left!

@docpop it's a compelling message if not for a compelling reason

Tek say vote

@molly0xfff The street's reaction to that BS gives me hope for the future.

DudelyZen

@molly0xfff I swear, SF just works on a completely different level. That used to be cool, now... not so much. Fertile land for scams.

ficate

@molly0xfff it's free monopoly money (that you can immediately cash out) in exchange for useless biometrics

Joseph A. Langley

@molly0xfff
I heard about that recently, and I wasn't entirely sure it was actually true. I wouldn't go anywhere near those. I also give it about a month before someone gets into the databases.

fingerless

@molly0xfff i love an orb. why does this orb have to suck.

Orca🌻 | 🏴🏳️‍⚧️

@molly0xfff@hachyderm.io What?! Is it even legal to collect biometrics just because someone stare into the orb? No consent of ToS or whatever the f--- required???

MonsieurHedge

@molly0xfff@hachyderm.io i appreciate this attempt to make a real-life equivalent of shiny-looking vases that you smash for loot

can't wait to pop one of these babies open and pawn the useful internal bits for a bit of pocket money. you so rarely get paid for good deeds

@molly0xfff I love how Molly uses logic and sources to eviscerate the claims about the (still evolving) purpose of a self-aggrandized startup already valued at billions. (The best footnote is #21)

Damon Holzborn

@molly0xfff “Sam Altman has recently boasted (without evidence) that one person is being signed up every eight seconds.”

I was curious to see how that compared to the birth rate. If my (admittedly cursory) research is correct, in the time it takes Worldcoin to get one person signed up, 36 new people people are born. 😁

@molly0xfff such lazy writing! "a solution in search of its problem" could be said for the whole blockchain tech!

/s (the lazy writing bit, not the uselessness of blockchains).

Fascinating take by MollyWhite on The Identity Problem and on how Sam Altman, by using WorldCoin and backed by VCs, wants to get an iris-scan from everybody on the planet.

@molly0xfff

Iris scan
Jorge Stolfi

@molly0xfff

Why can't those WorldCoin orbs be fooled by synthetic iris images?

Gabriel Pettier

@JorgeStolfi @molly0xfff i've seen claims it accepted multiple registrations, so i don't think it would be too hard to generate a fake iris image to fool it.

Peter Nimmo

@molly0xfff “Innovative ideas in mechanism design and the attribution of social relationships will be necessary“ is an amazing way of saying "We don't know how to fix this"- this being an issue which, to me, looks like a fatal flaw

Christoffer S.

@molly0xfff
Looks and sounds like something Space Karen would try and do? A global app for everything and a global currency to use.

I will also admit to my great ignorance and lack of understanding of the greater cryptocurrency ecosystem.

Great article!

Brindy

@molly0xfff great essay!

I am curious what your quantum computing prediction is? Sooner or later than Halpin? Or perhaps something else?
