Thoughtful post on #mental #health problems for the people who make the #fediverse run, by @thisismissem .

Not sure how much of it can be addressed with money, but some of it can. We need to find ways of sustainably funding the existing fediverse, and not just that, all the innovations we need and want in the future. Donations isn’t it. Heroic efforts by individuals who then burn out isn’t it either. Constructive suggestions?

I think finding a model for sustainable development and operations of the #fediverse is fundamental for survival of healthy information space. Could #wikimedia approach be helpful?

@volodymyr @thisismissem how would you apply it?

If I donate to Wikipedia I fund the greatest encyclopedia ever created. If I donate to (whom exactly) I fund (what exactly)?

volodymyr

@J12t @thisismissem donate to #mastodon (or #kbin , etc) developers and instances to get space for communication and news where I spend at least an hour a day. If I can pay for a coffee I am drinking while writing this, I can pay for keeping this medium alive. The fact that #wikimedia is alive means this model is possible to a degree. Maybe a slightly broader foundation could be a way to do this which is a bit less volatile.

@volodymyr @thisismissem oh, the money is not the problem. People have, what, $50 or more to spend on mobile phone service per month, and use free Wi-Fi half the time anyway. (Imagine if people spent $50 per month on the fediverse, and what could be done!)

The interesting question is: why are they fine with spending it on cell service and not on an open communication network eg the fediverse? What could be done to change that?

volodymyr

@J12t @thisismissem well, they pay for cell service because they have no other way to access it. #wikipedia is I think a better example since nobody is forced to pay for it. Why does it live? Because it has become well known? #mastodon is getting there. By the way, maybe #wikimedia could itself support #fediverse since #jimmywales wt.social did not quite work out? Also, by the way, I think instances with subscriptions, at least optional, would not be crazy.
