Super interesting. All the “unwritten rules” stuff makes me wonder how those folks deal with cultural diversity IRL, or if they’ve just never encountered it?

Yep, that’s immensely shitty, and have seen people talking about how that’s happened to them. It would be useful to have demographic data like that in connection with the sort of informal research posted above. I’ve also seen a number of privileged white dudes experience similar and leave (in a dramatic huff, usually), but I have far less sympathy for them. @scottmatter Bluesky currently has just one (centrally moderated) server, but after they roll out federation, it will be exactly as moderatable as the fediverse, which is to say…locally + by defederation. Does bluesky have a CW feature? Also, will be interesting to see if / how people in the bluesky ecosystem do / don’t self-censor or engage in the kind of cultural politics around they described to you from their disappointing experiences with mastodon And, maybe ironically, it seems like CW culture and the tone / intensity of policing it are already highly variable across the fediverse. So feels a bit weird to me that folks left mastodon altogether rather than just trying another server. |
@scottmatter @kissane the people I saw being dogpiled the most for violating the unwritten rules were the Black and Indigenous posters. Maybe ask them how they deal with “cultural diversity” in real life.
