The scary part for me has always been that, most people tend are oblivious to the fact that their map search display are "tailored" for them: targetted ads, or profile history.
Alphabet/Google can be said did that very successfully. Cheap Android devices, and the need to go to places - so, Google Maps fits nicely in this equation.
