Mastodon•ART 🎨 Curator

Welcome new artists, on .art and otherwise!

The fediverse has a huge community of blind and partially sighted users who rely on screenreaders to interact with posts with media. Alt text exists for this reason; without it, a screenreader will just say 'image' - but you, dear artist, can provide a more appropriate description of the image or photograph you're sharing.

See mastodon.art/@Curator/10927903 .

Accessibility is important, and many of us won't share un-described media.

@Curator
And a request.
I post a lot of images (photos and memes) and type alt-text on each one - I’m happy to do this and find no hardship or inconvenience whatever.

However…

In viewing posts with alt-text attached, very often the quantity typed obscures the image and I don’t see a way around this (iOS, phone & iPad, using Toot! app).

It would be lovely if we had an option to suppress alt-text so sighted viewers can enjoy the original image.

Thanks!
Cynthia

Which app are you using? I use the website version saved to my phone/tablet. There the alt text is not shown when you open the image.

Which, I just realised, causes the problem of not knowing if a picture has alt text or not 😶

I use Toot! iOS as I avoid all interaction with my Dell Windows.
I can’t figure a way around this…
Thanks, though.

Ahhh, okay. I only used the official app and tusky before I switched and like it this way the best. That's why I recommend it constantly without being asked :'D

@Curator Say if I share a link to an image instead of uploading one fresh is there a way to add descriptive text to that as well?

I asked after this yesserday:
