The government of « la patrie des droits de l'homme » is speeding up its move to autocracy.

After the repeated application of Article 49.3, threatening to remove civil society organizations [1], passing laws to allow algorithmic surveillance “for the Paris 2024 Olympics” [2], using a motorized repression brigade (BRAV-M) to beat down protesters [3] ...

And of course, there is always an encryption angle.

Darmanin, French Minister of the Interior, is now calling for increased surveillance of encrypted messaging apps. Complaining that the wiretaps of phone lines are yielding diminishing returns, and that the same means as terrorism cases should be used against protesters.

French police put protesters in custody.

Police says they are free to go if they provide them with the unlock code of their phones. The people under custody refuse.

They ended up getting charged for “refusal to hand over to the judicial authorities a secret encryption key of a means of cryptology”

Even worse for one of the protesters, who didn't bring his phone and got the same charge ...

🇫🇷🕵️‍♂️ The new French law “loi d'orientation et de programmation du ministère de la Justice” would allow investigators to use IOT/smartphones microphones and cameras to spy remotely.

But France being France, they are debating an amendment excepting sextoys.

Looking forward to a new niche market of smartphones with strong vibrators that wouldn’t be legal to wiretap because they are categorized as sextoys
