@tbehrens @furby @vagina_museum I also find it in the 1900 edition: see https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=ien.35558005329269&view=1up&seq=318 The OED also notes an 1898 usage in this sense in another work, as well as an 1895 usage in an English translation of a German work that appears to use it with the usual present-day sense.
