The history of coffee...

It was banned, multiple times, under reasons we nowadays find ridiculous, like religious (which is almost always a flimsy disguise for political) grounds and bad science, people didn't care much for somebody else telling them what to do with their bodies in their spare time and used it anyway, which kickstarted the coffee-drinking culture, and as a consequence led to its fair share of political unrest until finally neophobia and conservatism and xenophobia gave in and the drink was normalized, and with it allowed the human society as a whole to progress.

Uhh... War on drugs, anyone?
