Future looks _suspiciously_ bright for fediverse and other indie/decentralization efforts.
Federal Reserve stopped printing infinite amount of money.
So, Venture Capital firms can't throw infinite amount of money into companies in hope to get even larger profit in distant future. They want some profit now.
So, Instead subsidize customers, to get more customers, companies will be squeeze revenue from existing customers and cut costs. Examples: Twitter checkmarks and API restriction, Reddit API restriction, cancellation of shows by streamings (Inside Job… never forgive!), layoffs (including indirect, by forcing back to office policy), Netflix attempt to stop password sharing, raising prices etc.
So people will be frustrated and will be looking for alternative. But switching from, let's say Whatsapp to Telegram have to sense because Telegram also need money now.
And here we have window of opportunity for indie projects of all kind.
Now you don't need to compete with large technologically superior company that has infinite money for advertisement and can subsidize customers. Now big scary company layoff half of staff and forced to squeeze each cent from customers. And you can use all juicy opensource code and use all infrastructure created by tech companies during ending gold rush. Now you can subsidize your «customers» by paying few bucks/month for server. Maybe some people even will help you with all that to get good service
