@lauren I don't think I'm influenced very much by hype here. I've been wanting to have 3D UIs since I dabbled with VRML in the 90s. The Quest by and large is a useless device (I own one).

What I see Apple has done is, one by one, knocked out the reasons why I think the Quest is useless. (There may be other reasons that are obstacles that I don't see yet, I can only talk about what I know now.) But how they have done it is something Meta largely can't copy. That's why I said "toast".

@J12t I have a Quest 2, and I consider it far from useless. Frankly, I don't think the VR/AR space is going to go mainstream anytime in the near future -- and certainly not with such a restricted experience uber-expensive device. If the Quest 3 brings the weight and size down significantly, the $500 price point will remain reasonable, and color passthrough will yield AR that's just fine for 99% of consumers interested. Apple has always treated their users like suckers, that's why I've avoided that ecosystem since their earliest days. They're only getting worse.
