@NatureMC @APoD @shane_kerr @dbellingradt@mastodon.social @APoD I know this engraving because it was on the cover of The Discoverers, a book which had a huge impression on me when I was young. @APoD To me this image shows a humble shepherd who has climbed to the peak of a mountain and pierced the firmament that bounds the dome of the sky over our earthly realm. (Note that the Sun and Moon are part of this realm.) Now he is getting his mind blown by the wonders of the celestial realms beyond ordinary knowledge. He's probably going to go found a cult. @APoD hey @mattgrayyes @garybrannan I know that name There was a Citation Needed episode about Camille Flammarion (which my girlfriend is coincidentally rewatching as we speak) thank you for making my timeline a little more delightful this morning, several years ago and completely by accident |
@APoD It is indeed called the Flammarion Engraving but after a certain Flammarion who printed it in his book. The artist rests unknown. More about it: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flammarion_engraving Perhaps @dbellingradt knows more? #histodon #bookstodon
