@gamingonlinux @Mojeek Also, this feels like another case of Goodhartโ€™s law in a way, just learned about it in the toot after yours in my feed: mastodon.social/@sil/110469146

@gamingonlinux I use DuckDuckGo a lot. It's very good and never tracks.

Zauberin Stardreamer

@gamingonlinux Yeah, and a lot of that stuff is now generating content with chatgpt or some other LLM -.-

@gamingonlinux Reddit and YouTube are only good search engines :blobcatgoogly:

@gamingonlinux I have to put Reddit at the end of every one of my searches to find information I actual want. So annoying.

I'd apply that to basically every search engine except Wiby and Ahmia, both of which are too niche anyways. Perhaps we need to return to link directories?

leandrofelgueiras

@gamingonlinux it's impossible sometimes to find a real result, at least on the first page.

I also feel like they are not respecting query operators? Like wrapping in quotes, negation, and/or, just don't work for me anymore it seems.

@gamingonlinux I really have to tweak the signal to noise ratio in favor by installing blocklist scripts to filter out known domains that I will never visit

There's just so much now like...

Pinterest image spam
Reposted Stack Exchange questions
Clickbait gaming news
Inferior clones of websites
Rehosted Unity documentation?

I feel like so much of this shouldn't even make it into my results in the first place but it does, sadly

@gamingonlinux I usually have to search something 2-3 times. Once on google, once on bing, and then sometimes on yandex/ecosia/startpage etc

@gamingonlinux
What? You don't like filtering out 5 useless paragraphs to get to the one with actual information, only to find out it is just and ad with an affiliate link?

Tony ๐Ÿฏ

@gamingonlinux I use Ecosia, it at least plants a tree for every 10 searches.

TheHolyTachanka

@gamingonlinux Startpage, SearX, LibreX, Whoogle and Swisscow better anyway

Been using ddg for a long time now. Recently tried google. I can't think how they still are having such a huge lead in search. Competition caught up to an great extended.
