@qurlyjoe

Still skeptical about Win11 "automatically" keeping my C: drive "defragmented."

qurly(not curly)joe

@DemocracySpot
Iโ€™m not sure how long the zebra will stay defragged. Maybe automatic would be good.

@DemocracySpot @qurlyjoe I'm not happy unless I can see little coloured blocks flying around the screen. Command-line defrag was the best. ๐Ÿ˜Š

@druid @DemocracySpot @qurlyjoe The best defragmentation tool I ever used was a program called ultimatedefrag. It was awesome, you could put your most used files at the fastest part if the drive, and least used at the slowest, to give you as much performance as possible.

@DemocracySpot @qurlyjoe Just remember, defragging is only good if you have an old style HDD. If you have a newer machine with an SSD instead, defragging is actually bad for it. So check first to make sure the drive is spinning rust, and not flash based storage. Just putting it out there as a P.S.A.

@latelesley @qurlyjoe

Thank you. It is a new machine. < 1 year.

@DemocracySpot @qurlyjoe If you're using an SSD, defragging isn't a thing anyway. Quit worrying and embrace the randomness :)

Thomas

@qurlyjoe Clearly the tail is reserved for system files.

Retepkce ๐Ÿˆ

@qurlyjoe great. If all would be caring about theirs, zebraโ€™s could get much fasterโ€ฆ

@qurlyjoe This is why I switched to Solid State Zebras.

Big Pawed Bear

@doot @qurlyjoe love that. and then there's the old joke, a zebra is a horse with a barcode, but, that's true, every zebra does have unique stripes, so, a barcode.

@sjaakkeuvelaar
It does take a while. Your patience will be rewarded.

Tiota Sram

@qurlyjoe there's a typo in your alt text: it reads "horse" for the caption where it should read "zebra."

Oblomov

@qurlyjoe (alt text: the last occurrence of horse should be zebra)

Jay

@qurlyjoe I tried to figure out who made this image, but in lieu of that hereโ€™s the oldest reference to it I can find. reddit.com/r/funny/comments/7c

Jay

@qurlyjoe And here it is going semi-viral on another site a day before it started blowing up on Reddit: twitter.com/27_b_6/status/9286

qurly(not curly)joe

@jsit
Interesting that neither of those give a credit either. Maybe the twitter one is the original? I was sent it from someone who probably saw it on FB.

Jay

@qurlyjoe Iโ€™ve reached out to the Twitter one to see if heโ€™s the original creator.

Penguin

@qurlyjoe @marcoarment Not a bad joke. But 1000โ€™s of Mastodonโ€™ers under a certain age just said, โ€œI donโ€™t get itโ€ ๐Ÿ™‚

qurly(not curly)joe

@PenguinToot
Very likely, but thereโ€™s so much of their world I donโ€™t get, so it evens out.

@marcoarment

Raroun
@qurlyjoe Seems the tail was in use while defragmenting ๐Ÿ˜€
K

@qurlyjoe Does it actually run faster? I always suspected that was a myth.

qurly(not curly)joe

@khad
Up to a point, the older it is the faster itโ€™ll go after defragging. Thereโ€™s a point of diminishing return, however.

Ramรณn ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ด

@qurlyjoe @marcoarment as not a developer I finally understand what defragging means ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿผ

RockyC

@qurlyjoe Only geeks of a certain age will TRULY understand.

@qurlyjoe Or "Don't ask an artist with OCD to draw a zebra".

Lu ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฒ

@qurlyjoe there's an error in the Alt text! You wrote horse instead of zebra.

qurly(not curly)joe

@luppano
Iโ€™m torn, tbh. Iโ€™m not an expert at all, but I suspect the image is actually a horse, not a zebra. So part of the joke is not knowing the difference.

Lu ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฒ

@qurlyjoe no, I mean you wrote that the caption says horse when it literally says zebra

qurly(not curly)joe

@luppano
All horses have been expunged. Itโ€™s zebras all the way down.

Lu ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฒ

@qurlyjoe i didn't even notice the first occurrence tbh :D

J Miller

@qurlyjoe

New excuse for when I want to decline an invitation.

Riikka Kannisto

@qurlyjoe OMG I laughed so hard! And thanks for the alt-text. I'm happy every time someone takes the time to write them.

dion

@qurlyjoe we need sort algorithms videos on zebras
