⚠️Google is raging war on the FOSS Aurora Store⚠️

Aurora is a staple tool for people looking to de-google their Android devices. Currently, the anonymous login functionality is broken (unclear if intentional by Google) - and they’re now deleting some Google accounts used through Aurora. Proceed with caution, spread the word, and support the Aurora project if you’re able 🚀 More info: discuss.techlore.tech/t/aurora

Google accounts getting deleted used with Aurora

Google deleting accounts? Really?

I find this hard to believe.

Lately, they said they will delete accounts with no activity after 2 years. But certainly not for login in there

@LinuxClaude from what I've seen so far, it's throwaway accounts that people have created for the sole purpose of using them with Aurora.

@techlore lets see what happens. I'm using an old account that was only previously used for an android tv box

If that gets deleted it's not a problem but I will update if it does

Draken BlackKnight

@techlore I'm using a burner account for Aurora. It would suck if they deleted it but I'm not too worried about it.

Rathmox

@techlore I just removed my account from the aurora store app, I will quickly create a new one to hold my brand account and delete my current one

we need to create some disposable google accounts to use between us

@techlore I avoid google in all ways possible. But what you think of the sandboxed approach of grapheneos?

Pat ✨

@Decentralize @techlore He has stopped commenting on GrapheneOS from 2 years now.

@Decentralize @techlore obviously having no Google / MicroG is better, but it seems pretty good if you need Google and want privacy

@techlore I recommend even further distancing from Google. Check out f-droid.org for Android apps built _only_ from open source.

@techlore Google seems to be on a tirade lately against people who just want to exist privately.

@techlore It has been like this for a few weeks now, the Anon login button doesn't even do anything anymore, shame. The only reason I ever open Aurora is to update apps. Having to login makes me want to check less often, which opens my device to vulnerabilities. You are the product, or we'll make it as difficult as possible for you to use the product.

@techlore
Alt Text so you can update it!

Google began deleting accounts that use Aurora Store
First reports came in today. The accounts that got deleted were solely used with Aurora Store.
Still, if you want to be safe, make sure that you only use disposable accounts which are not associated with an important Google account to log in through Aurora Store. Also, it's a not so friendly reminder to ideally make yourself independent of Google

Seems like the kraken has awoken.
If you're wondering why anonymous logins currently don't work: Aurora's main developer Rahul Patel is working on it. It's a good time to consider a donation for this project that is so central for the Open Source community around usable versions of Android free of Google's PlayServices.

Gabor

@techlore yes Aurora has been increasingly broken for some time now. Currently only usable with a google account :-(

@techlore I’m a fan of Aurora, but I don’t think any of us didn’t expect this sort of thing. Their entire purpose is to bypass Google’s Play Store while accessing Play Store data (apps). It’s not entirely unreasonable for Google to work to prevent “unauthorised” access.

Aurora is important, but the ideal we need is for app vendors to adopts alternative stores (not fDroid as many are legitimately & reasonably commercial).

Still, will be interested to see how Aurora works around this!

AFx

@wiredfire F-Droid is not anti-commercial, but anti proprietary application.

Wiredfire :BA:

@AFx fdroid has no route for an app developer to sell their app directly to the user.

Fully agree, it was a matter of time. The poitive thing though: G💩💩gle seems this important enough an issue to act upon it, so maye users reached a critical mass where it wasn't acceptable any more?
In terms of alternatives: I guess it will be hard to convince people to pay with real money and not with their data. The average user (think your average family member) has been conditioned into this business-model over years. I have had a hard time convincing people close to me to use commercial messenger apps with good privacy (license: 5€) to communicate with me as they didn't see the point.
If you go into Fdroid land you lose many fancy apps but I am totally ready to embark on the low-tech boat here, in fact I never used fancy G playstore apps in the first place and am totally happy. It's hard to get used to less fancy stuff once you subscribe to this model. I'm not missing anything. Oh well yes I do: apps for public transport 😬🫣

@techlore ah that's why my anonymous aurora hasn't been working properly since a few weeks. Was relying on apkmirror and apkpure since then. But aurora has been seemless.

privacy matters

@techlore #CustomRom are coming under more and more pressure, either because they don't like the Aurora store or because they tie apps to google playstore so they won't work without it.

The AppLonge Store from System #eOS still works.

You can then use the apps #SAI or #AppManager (fdroid) to generate the apk or apks and install or update them on other devices.

The AppLonge apk is not usable without eOS.

@nikita @techlore Thanks for the Information about alternative ways.
