The most peculiar thing is that it’s easier to witness ideological shades of grey in the takes of this war’s actual stakeholders—the people of Ukraine and Russia, whose future had been tainted by warmongering kleptocrats. But post-soviet emigrants, long-time citizens of other countries—they are en masse a different matter. They tend to consider this war as a monumental struggle between the ultimate good and the ultimate evil—no matter what you’ve done before, if you’re with the good guys, you’re a hero.
This soccer-fan mentality, when their team is always at fault, while ours is always perfectly fine, is the most disgusting ideological twist ever. This shit creates dichotomies between «OUR patriots and THEIR nazis,» between «OUR freedom fighters and THEIR terrorists.»
Geographical distance tends to oversimplify things—this is perhaps one of the reasons for such behavior. But there’s also the «immigrant’s curse»—a toxic cultural connection to the place you’ve fled from. Not positive cultural bonds but the toxic subconscious feeling of involvement fueled by the failure of integration. You can see this mental parasite flourishing among any large immigrant community.
