The Moonshae map is taking form, this is now very close to what I’ve been aiming for. It’ll pop into life when I add more text, but you can see the concept, 3d rendered terrain on old sea chart. I’m going to stack the final map with a fair few more details, #ttrpg #cartography

@chloethecartographer Seeing the multiple compass rose's had me renewing my old attempt to understand why there were so many of them on old maps. The answer is Rhumb Line networks that were used for sailing navigation. So now I know that. Map is looking great!

@benkramer thanks. It's nice in this view, you can really see how real navigation works. I will confess that for this map, I've guessed/drawn those rhumb lines by hand, they are probably a fair bit wrong. It's fine, that map is still more accurate than any map that would likely exist in Toril, but I'd like to do better next time....

@benkramer I was thinking if it would be fun to run realistic navigation with the players on a map like this. Print it REALLY big. Twice. DM has her map, marks the exact location, players give the heading they want to sail, rolls are made for perception, survival, navigators tools, the real heading they move in is then known to DM who describes the features they can see from the crows nest. Players then have to figure out where they are. Map has many dangerous areas marked...

@chloethecartographer I would be very surprised if there wasn't a system or supplement document out there for just such a thing.

@chloethecartographer @BenKramer Oh wow, what a delightful digression! 😃 I just read the Wikipedia page without knowing a think. This is great. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhumblin

@kensanata @benkramer interesting stuff indeed. I'm more interested in the "Rhumba line", ha ha ( see my typo in the first edit of the above toot) . I guess that's a whole other thing.... well it made me laugh. I used to ballroom dance so I guess that's my sense of humour.
