The dwarven city cross section map is finally finished. A geological survey focused on rock types feels a likely product of an underground society. As a result I’ve made the strata and faults of the rocks the most vibrant and detailed part of the map, leaving the tunnels and buildings as mostly negative space. I’m super pleased with how it turned out. Map will be on sale as an art print soon. #ttrpg #gamemap #gamemaps #mapmaker #mapmakers #cartography #cartographer #cavecity

@chloethecartographer omg it looks amazing! Love the huge little octopus in the right!

Chloe the cartographer

@kexe at this point he or someone like him is almost a trademark of my maps…

MerGlOwl, Octopus-Faenby

@chloethecartographer @kexe And it is totally in character, sneakily having one arm play with the compas :blob_rainbowheart:

Chloe the cartographer

@kexe I love that you describe him as a "huge little". Ha ha, but yes.

waytooshiny

@chloethecartographer so much information in one map and it doesn’t look cluttered! Well done! 🤩

Chloe the cartographer

@waytooshiny thanks, I do have tendency to clutter so it's good to have got it right

Gecq

@chloethecartographer OMG, is there a way to get a high res version of this awesome map? I love it!

@chloethecartographer That is gorgeous! Do you mind if I share this image in a Discord forum to prompt some discussion about dwarves?

@chloethecartographer wow just incredible, the detail and 3d view is really helpful

@chloethecartographer I had been waiting to see the final map and it's looks incredible. Just really inspiring.

Chloe the cartographer

@sarajw I have, it's been a while, but I do love them.

Scarer Joy :happy_pepper:

@chloethecartographer Did you have the Discworld dwarfs in mind when putting this together? I feel like it's totally fitting my nebulous mental image of their mountain :)

Chloe the cartographer

@sarajw not specifically, although there is a lot to love about their culture. I was actually channelling dungeons and dragons dwarfs or dwarfs from the game dwarf fortress.

boajornada

@chloethecartographer Wow!
This map alone tells me more about dwarven society than most of the material I've ever read about them. And it's gorgeous!
I never cared much about dwarveb underground cities and their dark rooms, but this makes their society feel alive! This is an underground city I'd like to visit and explore.

Chloe the cartographer

@boajornada thanks. If I was to do this again, or another similar map, I'd like to include some sketches of their architecture. The maps is super functional, but I think the buildings would have a stone carved aesthetic that's hard to convey in plans and cross sections.

This is gorgeous. And a brilliant idea to map it this way. I realise I've never seen a good dwarven city map until now.

@chloethecartographer that’s really impressive! So much details and so readable at the same time! 🙌👌

Eric James Soltys

@chloethecartographer Beautiful map. I think I spotted a typo. Should that be "Governance"?

Chloe the cartographer

@esoltys yep, fixed, thanks. there are a couple more. Acquisitions and sustenance. If you see any others please say, I’m terrible at spelling.

@chloethecartographer This is so cool! Your consideration about strata and faults makes total sense. I'm also amazed at how I can feel my brain bending, trying to imagine this space in three dimensions. The connection from the flooded caves to the ocean definitely did this for me.

I noticed a small typo; would you like me to point it out, or would that be unwelcome?

@chloethecartographer

This is wonderful! I really like the cutaway and the mix of section and plan to show the complex in more detail.

This reminds me of the Trollbrucke I did several years ago ( rthorm.wordpress.com/tag/cross ), but yours is much more detailed and elaborate than that was.

@chloethecartographer this very much gives me David Macaulay vibes, but a dwarf city. Love it!

Chloe the cartographer

@montecook sub monte is Latin for under mountain, but I'll be honest I just needed to change the name to differentiate from the clients version. I will be selling this one. Naming things is hard.

PJ Coffey

@chloethecartographer @montecook

Undermountain is being squatted already in fairness...

Monte Cook

@chloethecartographer Yeah, I know. I just thought it was funny.

Bee O'Problem

@chloethecartographer It'd be super cool to see something like this done with a Dwarf Fortress creation. Especially one from a succession game where they evolve more like an actual city thanks to different creators' ideas clashing or being forgotten.

Periapt Games

@chloethecartographer That is an absolutely incredible cross section!

Vincent

@chloethecartographer Oh gosh it's so beautiful! I freaking love the design and the idea.

I've drawn some of these maps in real life. I am glad to see them used in fantasy worlds and maps, because they explain so much of where some things are...

@chloethecartographer Does the dangerous subterranean fauna include a Balrog? 😬

Gary Parker

@chloethecartographer oooo, all the flashbacks to the MERP Moria sourcebook I pored over for hours as a teenager 🥰

elilla&, travesti da macumba

@chloethecartographer I don't know if you want to do commissions but I bet you'd get clients if you offer to draw people's fortresses in Dwarf Fortress, this is so in vibe
