Wonder of Science

A snapping turtle emerges from weeks of sleeping beneath a muddy lake that had dried up.

The massive turtle in the photo has a tall column of soil covering most of its shell. The top of the column is perfectly flat, and various green plant grow on the top, so that it seems the turtle has a little world on its back. Description by @Rachel_Thorn@queer.party

Perhaps, it's not possible though to assume that one is sure of how ancient myths began imo.

@GreenFire @wonderofscience The "surely" in the case was not meant to be taken literally.

I was about to say that mound of dirt looks kind of.. Pachyderm-ish.

@MattFerrel @wonderofscience I also strongly recommend @PleaseCaption , which also nudges you when you boost a toot that includes an uncaptioned image.

@wonderofscience this is obviously how Great A'Tuin came to be.

@wonderofscience OMG it even took its own weighted blanket with it!

Put some elephants between the greenery and his shell and this is a picture of the world turtle.

@wonderofscience My humble contribution to the memeing in this thread: Torterra.

Concept art for the Pokémon Torterra, a green armor red turtle with a tree growing out of its back.

@Haste @wonderofscience I came to this thread to find this response. Please accept my humble like.

Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar

@wonderofscience Definitely feeling the weight of the world on its back.

Axel Rauschmayer

@wonderofscience It looks like it was completely covered during sleeping(?) How did it breathe then?

Pusher Of Pixels

@rauschma @wonderofscience yeah that was my question. Some snapping turtles have really long telescoping necks so maybe it would snorkel it's head up when it needed to breathe

Axel Rauschmayer

@pixelpusher220 Makes sense! (Sadly one doesn’t always see all replies on Mastodon—yours did not show up on my server.)

"Most of the other turtles had moved on already (..) and this one was deeply buried, showing no sign of emerging. Perhaps she'd gone already, managing to leave her transmitter behind.

But then the earth stirred, and, writhing, she emerged. (..)

But she began her journey toward her winter mud hole with no obvious sign of additional effort. "She was just trucking right along,"

▫️The turtle: about 13 pounds (6 kilograms)
▫️"world" on her back weighed: 18 pounds (8 kg)

"See the TURTLE of enormous girth! On his shell he holds the earth. His thought is slow but always kind; he holds us all within his mind .On his back all vows are made; he sees the truth but mayn't aid. He loves the land and loves the sea, And even loves a child like me."

@wonderofscience oh snap, where's your science now, round globular spherical earthers?

Tim McCormack

@binsk @wonderofscience You put the monocle on the snapping turtle, I'll stand back here and film.

@wonderofscience This reminds me of Freya's house on top of a Giant Turtle in God of War and God of War: Ragnarok when Kratos deals with the Norse gods.

@wonderofscience

Fantastic report on "butt gas" and snappers. Thanks for sharing!

PS Jen

@wonderofscience We had some big snappers in the mill pond- amazing to imagine sitting under that muck all winter.

Harris✔︎

@wonderofscience So ... it really is turtles all the way down?

Wow.

@pineywoozle (s) for HARRIS

@wonderofscience He looks like he could be the origin story for Terry Pratchett’s turtle

Ayespy

@wonderofscience Objective proof that it's turtles all the way down.

@GoAskAlice @wonderofscience I now have to wonder if this is how the ancient myth started.
