I'm not sure who needs to hear this but you don't owe anyone on the internet your real name or a profile image that's a real photo of you.

@trixter I was very skeeved or weirded out doing that first off on Twtr. Then needed a thirst trap-ish pic of me for a bit for Reasons, and got used to it.

Have used usernames everywhere possible, which always slows signing up processes for new places before I find the right new name to use wherever, when in need of a change.

I need at least 3 levels that my usernames (or often even photos used) work on, meanings checked as well as whatever I like the feel of.

@ElysiaMacht I used to use this same handle on the birdsite but then I needed to work at a place with basic security clearance and TBH there were people who I didn't want being able to check in on me so I made a totally new account for it.

Mlep

@trixter I remember when the book of faces decided to implement a real name policy back in, what was it, 2004? I had a bad feeling about the direction things were going.

I've always preferred handles.

@Mlep It used to be common knowledge that you shouldn't just give out your real name all over the place, like we were all fae creatures, and then you got places like Facebook that wanted to normalize you giving them as much Personally Identifiable Information as they could sucker out of you.

jae

@trixter are you not actually a pixelated cat? I feel cheated.

Trip

@jae @trixter Trix is a pixelated cat in all the ways that really matter.

MsPraxis

@trixter I think a lot of people need to hear this!

@trixter are you saying you don’t believe that’s my real picturE? 😜

robotman

@trixter Funny, I thought we were all using pictures of our faces the whole time. I’m clearly a dog with great shades.

Uraael

@trixter@retro.pizza Damn straight. This has been my internet name since the late 90s and at this point its as much mine/me as my birth name.

ktvand

@trixter Agreed. Having worked at a company that fired people for posting work info (they violated NDAs) taught me the value of not using my real info. It's job security-and real security for members of marginalized groups.

darf 😈

@trixter on the internet, no one knows you're a cat.

@trixter Indeed, and I would add to that that nobody has the right to post photos of strangers or anyone not explicitly consenting to having photos of them or any of their personally identifiable information (PII) published, which includes license plates and geolocated photos as well. Especially not on social networks that run uploaded photos through facial recognition and OCR software, read image EXIF data for "auto-tagging" purposes or are otherwise creepy about it. That's why I'll avoid publishing photos of people if it's not a silhouette, I'll remove EXIF data from photos beforehand, and why we seek parent consent of children participating in our community events and such. Doing this is not just good practice but might save you from legal trouble as well.

Fern

@trixter thanks for saying this. My IRL name is not Fern and I am definitely not an Animal Crossing Character. But I AM a real person who has been online long enough to value anonymity and who cares about people.

TVNRed

@trixter I am a huge believer in online anonymity for regular folks..family, employers or colleagues don’t need to see everything you say

Tattooed_Mummy

@trixter I always used to lose followers on bird site if I changed my avi to my actual face 😂

BeeCycling

@trixter Having been on the internet since the 90s, when it was just basic common sense that you didn't use your real name, especially not if you're a woman, then the only social network place I've ever done so is Facebook - and I'm not on there any more anyway.

I've used a picture of me now and again, but usually don't. Given that I'm the one who has to look at my profile picture the most, I'd rather look at something else.

Rich Rubin

@trixter It’s a fine line for me as an author so I’ll meet somewhere in the middle. In the past I’ve used cartoon versions of pictures of myself. Currently my profile picture is me, I just have my hoodie pulled right and my phone strategically in front of my face as I take a selfie in the mirror
