Look at these fine old beech trees basking in the early spring sunshine. This group lives on the western edge of Dartmoor, near Walkhampton.
Notice that several of them are growing in a line, on a field boundary. They appear to be growing out of a stone wall, but this style of enclosure consists of a double wall with earth between and is known as "Devon banking".
