@eff The specific problem with TikTok is national security—personal data of millions of mostly younger citizens of western countries going straight to a hostile totalitarian state well known for exploiting such data to undermine opposition—not data privacy per se.

Also there is very limited control by the US government to avert another George Floyd type of public mobilization event with a foreign entity at the control switch.

@Youtube_Zombie @eff Precisely. The app is entirely algorithm-driven, and ultimately the CCP has control over what that algorithm shows. Any amount of manipulation is possible without anyone knowing.

@Youtube_Zombie @eff It is, but instead we're seeing all these defences of them focusing on privacy in general. Privacy laws in the States do need to be stronger but this isn't the time.
