“I was a paid-up member of the male–female brain brigade. It took me several years and a long struggle to realize that I was just not finding the kinds of differences I expected.”

Cognitive neuroscientist Gina Rippon explains that there was never a scientific basis to the myth that male and female brains are biologically different — instead, a major reason why even young children behave differently depending on their gender is because they are “tiny social sponges”.

@mpesce do the sponges absorb the gender fluid

Juggling With Eggs

@mpesce I saw Gina Rippon speak at the #Norwich science festival a few years back and she was saying exactly this: there is no male-female brain. She’s a really good speaker who makes her research incredibly accessible and entertaining.

Juggling With Eggs

@JugglingWithEggs @mpesce I should add that I think how the brain functionally works is entirely separate to how people identify when it comes to gender.

@mpesce I wonder if the gender of someone or the socio-economic status of their parent have more impact on their brain

The Duality of Xan

@mpesce I read an old experiment where two groups of parents were shown a young child to see their reaction. They had the stereotypical reactions of “oooh aren’t you pretty” or “look at the big strong man” and gave them gender-appropriate toys to play with. The two groups had been shown the exact same child wearing different clothing.

Sadly, not surprising.
Also, in my experience, baby girls tend to get less attention generally.
Observed (enraptured)reaction to baby boy making humming sounds: "Oooh, he is interested in cars!";
reaction to baby girl doing the same: nil

@mpesce Is this a statement on gender identity or on the idea that women are better at some tasks and men are better at others?

@mpesce I think a lot of us are waking up to this.

But even in cases where there are inherent differences, those differences are often small compared with the differences between individuals and differences in socialization.

I mean, the ultimate example is how many non-professional, non-competitive (i.e. casual) male tennis players believe they could beat Serena Williams in a match. Like, /even if/ men are on average better than women in tennis the differences in training and individual genetics would obviously dwarf that difference...but some people really struggle to understand that.

@mpesce

Not to mention the hormones that affect the brain though! - different in male/female

@mpesce thank you for posting this looks very interesting. I have only skimmed ot but look forward to reading it properly and listening to the podcasts. I have never accepted the theory of gender based neuorlogical differences &:thought it revealed more about the bias of the researchers than scientific evidence. Racial theory, criminal typology debunked alteady.

To avoid confusion, "paid-up" here means "wholehearted".

DELETED

@mpesce If this was true, you’d find radically different gender roles across different cultures.

DELETED

@mpesce I’m also convinced that neuroscience can tell us exactly zero about psychology.

@mpesce Everyone should stop and read about what John Money (the inventor of the concept of “gender identity”) to David Reimer.

Anyone (especially a neuroscientist) who claims to know what’s going on with this stuff should be ignored.

ko kāihe ahau 🫏 :verified:

@mpesce @chartier gotta be careful with this line of thinking. John Money tried this back in the 60s (swapping gender in a brother and sister via social aspects) and both kids ended up killings themselves.

@mpesce They buried the important findings. That women tend to "prefer" certain professions because of cultural exclusion.

The title and blurb hide what her research is actually about.
