Amazon shutting down their Smile charity program.

Ten years ago, we launched AmazonSmile to make it easier for customers to support their favourite charities. However, since launch, the programme has not grown to create the impact that we had originally hoped.

AmazonSmile represents a very small portion of the total charitable contributions made through our other programmes, which we estimate at more than £100 million in 2021.

We are writing to let you know that we plan to wind down AmazonSmile by February 20, 2023. We will continue to pursue and invest in other programmes that we know will have more impact—from providing support to families in need, to using our logistics infrastructure and technology to assist communities impacted by natural disasters.

We recognise that these are difficult times for everyone, including charities, so we are providing an additional one-time donation to participating charities equivalent to six months of what they earned through the programme in 2022, and they will also be able to accrue additional donations until the program officially closes in February. Once AmazonSmile closes, charities will still be able to seek support from Amazon customers by creating their their own wish lists.

@gamingonlinux I guess we can stop conning ourselves that when we use Amazon we're just profiting a horrible soulless corporation , no more no less :)

@gamingonlinux Does that mean that if I use Amazon after 20.02. I will now be spending money on a platform that completely disregards as many labor laws as it legally can while enriching the already rich and powerful, instead of a platform that, with their charity called Smile (that means it's good), helps oh so many people in need?

@gamingonlinux PR speak for "We don't want to continue this program that reduces our profits. Please continue to buy things for charities so our profits are bigger than before. "
That's how I see this.

@gamingonlinux Poor destitute Jeff needs to save some pennies somewhere.

@gamingonlinux what is even worse is the messaging. I hate when corporations try to frame changes like this as "we supported too much and we're stretched thin, but this will allow us to do better" and at the same time say "buy the charities stuff from their wishlist." It is the same kind of mentality that public educators have to endure.

I know corporations exist to make money, but the constant greed everywhere is getting exhausting.

@gamingonlinux well Jeff does need to finance his new super yacht, guess they had to cut costs somehow, or is it that there isn’t a tax break on it anymore? 🤔

@gamingonlinux I've never heard of it here in Spain, I guess they dindn't try to show it to the rest of the world...

@gamingonlinux Well that's disappointing. It felt slightly less depressing buying things on Amazon when I knew a charity was getting some of it.

@gamingonlinux screw Amazon. I’m so tired of them becoming more of a monopolistic monster. I cancelled a bunch of my services through them last night. You know they only shut this down so they could keep that .5% too.
