@yogthos do I need to start studying Mandarin, or will the research translate across languages?

Yogthos

@oz it does seem like machine translation keeps getting better every year. So probably not a requirement.

I do suspect that Mandarin will be an important language to know going forward though. I started learning last year myself.

@yogthos I question the methodology of this work. There is lots of great work from Chinese authors but I haven't noticed any massive change like the study suggests.

@zzz I haven't been following the rate of publications myself to be honest. I did see a separate more broad study indicating that China has outpaced US both in terms of quantity and quality of research though physicsworld.com/a/china-overt

It seems natural that a country with over three times the population and a stronger education system that's free at all levels would be producing more quality research.

@yogthos

There is amazing work going on, but it's not quite that far away.

airankings.org/ is a good illustration for what I mean.

You can see that Chinese universities clearly have a growing and might soon be dominant presence. But it's uneven. Clearly dominating in computer vision and NLP, soon to be dominant for machine learning, but no presence in robotics.

@zzz I think the whole domestic high tech push is fairly recent, so it's not too surprising it's uneven at the moment. It's gonna be interesting to see where it all goes in a decade or so.
