Basecamp is getting a lot of flak on twitter for banning discussions of "societal politics" on company-owned chat systems:

Setting aside the arguments for/against for a moment, isn't this the status quo at like, most employers everywhere?
My experience is in small-to-large private sector companies in the midwest, but it seems very Silicon Valley to me that this policy (discouraged from discussing politics on company time/equipment, you are free to engage in activism and support causes in your private life) is thought of as remarkable or unusual
