Since some folks are on instances that unfortunately suspend Fosstodon, and so won't see my last boost, I'm going to repost this myself as well. For those that can, please boost the original toot instead:

Be has just added an issue on Github suggesting that the captioning functionality on Mastodon should become more visible, to encourage more people to use it. Be also suggested making them opt-out, meaning people would get warned when posting uncaptioned images, but given the large amount of people on here who are honestly not capable of describing, I'd only support such a feature if the warnings were easy to turn off in the preferences. I definitely don't want anyone to feel guilty for being disabled ... :ms_worried:

@darius Since Gargron has previously expressed unwillingness to add such a feature (see this issue:

), how hard do you think it would be to add something like this to Hometown? You have mentioned wanting to add more accessibility features in the past, and this is definitely a wanted one. I'm not sure how hard it wold be to code, but the basic code for confirmation dialogs is already there at least. And you could use this PR:

@Mayana @darius I think you're reading too much into what Gargron posted there. I interpret his post as objecting to making captions a mandatory requirement. He very well could have a different opinion if it isn't a strict requirement.

@be @Mayana hmm I am curious to see where discussion goes on this, since it's been stale for a year and usually when there is a flurry of activity, core devs respond. I've subscribed to the main issue thread, and also to the related pull request that Be recently commented on. (I like your idea of a text reminder underneath the toot button. I have tucked messages there before on Friend Camp.)
